Job summary

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) seeks a Light Rail Operator to transport passengers on a light rail system, ensuring safety and on-time service. The role requires assisting passengers, operating a wheelchair lift, keeping records, and communicating with dispatch on a daily basis.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Operate a light rail vehicle safely and per schedule.
  • Board and alight passengers; assist disabled passengers; secure wheelchairs.
  • Make stops announcements and relay information to passengers; operate two-way radio.
  • Prepare accident/incident reports and maintain records.
  • Couple/uncouple light rail vehicles; move and spot vehicles in yard.
  • Inspect vehicles and report malfunctions; troubleshoot faulty equipment.
  • Operate track switches and perform signaling duties.
  • Follow safety procedures and perform related duties as required.

This position is only open to VTA employees who are represented by the local Amalgamated Transit Union, 265

Definition: Under general supervision, a Light Rail Operator transports passengers in a light rail vehicle.

Classification: Bargaining Unit: ATU

Essential Job Functions
  • Operates a light rail vehicle safely and in accordance with a designated schedule;
  • Picks up and drops off passengers;
  • Aids passengers in special circumstances including offering assistance in boarding or de-boarding disabled passengers;
  • Operates the wheelchair lift when necessary and secures passengers' wheelchairs;
  • Calls out stops and provides information to passengers;
  • Operates a two-way radio;
  • Prepares accident and incident reports;
  • Keeps records;
  • Couples and uncouples light rail vehicles;
  • Moves and spots vehicles in the yard;
  • Visually inspects light rail vehicles and reports their condition verbally and/or in writing;
  • Routinely observes and reports any system or component malfunction or failure;
  • Troubleshoots and operates malfunctioning light rail vehicles;
  • Operates track switches;
  • Provides hand signals or traffic flagging;
  • Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications

Training and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma and possession of a valid California Class C driver's license at the time of appointment, and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Class B license and LRV operator certification.

Driving record may not have more than three (3) moving violations within the last three (3) years.

Must be eighteen (18) years of age at the time of application.

Must have a good attendance record at school and/or previous job.

Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and odd and unusual hours.

As a condition of employment, each employee in this class must sign a payroll deduction authorization form providing for the deduction of union membership fees.

  • In accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, all job applicants selected for appointment to this safety-sensitive position are subject to pre-employment drug testing. A final job applicant will be tested for five prohibited drugs (and their metabolites): Cocaine, PCP, Amphetamines, Marijuana, and Opiates. During employment, employees holding safety-sensitive positions (Bus Drivers) are subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.
  • In accordance with Federal Regulation 49 CFR Part 40.25, VTA is required to obtain all information regarding any positive drug test results, any alcohol test results of .04 or above, any refusal to test, and any records of evaluation and/or treatment resulting from such tests from current, previous, and potential employers for the past two years.
  • You will be required to complete and sign a "Drug and Alcohol Background Check Consent Form" if you are offered this position.
  • Candidates will be required to be fingerprinted for the purpose of obtaining "Summary Criminal History Conviction Information" from state and federal record agencies.

ATU employees hired on or after January 1, 2016 contribute one-half of the "normal cost" toward the required employee contribution to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority-Amalgamated Transit Union (SCVTA-ATU), Local 265 Pension Plan effective 01/01/16 (1/8/16 pay date).

Social Security taxes will be deducted from each employee's bi-weekly salary.

As a condition of employment, each employee in this class must sign a payroll deduction authorization form providing for deduction of ATU union membership dues.
