Job summary

The HT Group in Austin is seeking a contract Technical Writer to document and standardize IT processes, procedures, and environments. The role is onsite 3-4 days per week and collaborates with IT leadership and subject matter experts to gather information and turn technical knowledge into clear documentation.

You will develop SOPs, runbooks, knowledge-base articles, and templates, identify gaps, and ensure documentation evolves with technology.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Technical Writer in IT/tech environments.
• Skilled at converting complex concepts into clear docs.
• Strong interviewing to capture requirements from SMEs.

Responsibilities

• Partner with IT leadership, engineers, administrators, and other subject matter experts to understand existing technical processes and workflows.
• Document current-state IT processes, procedures, systems, and operational practices.
• Create and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), process documentation, runbooks, knowledge-base articles, and other technical materials.
• Identify gaps, inconsistencies, and outdated information within existing documentation.
• Translate complex technical information into clear, concise documentation that can be easily understood and followed.
• Organize documentation so information is consistent, accessible, and easy to maintain.
• Facilitate working sessions and interviews with technical teams to capture processes and institutional knowledge.
• Develop documentation standards and templates to create consistency across the IT organization.
• Update documentation as processes and technology environments evolve.
• Support broader IT improvement initiatives as additional documentation needs are identified.
