Job description

The NYC Financial Information Services Agency - Office of Payroll Administration (FISA-OPA) seeks to hire an IT Intern in the Technical Services group, who will help and learn how to support maintenance and security of our corporate Windows 11 environment. This role provides a learning experience in enterprise Windows administration, focusing on patch management (Ivanti, SCCM/MECM), endpoint reporting, and technical troubleshooting.

The successful candidate will assist with system audits, utilize PowerShell and Excel for data analysis, and help resolve workstation issues to ensure seamless business operations. This is an ideal entry-point for a candidate looking to gain practical experience in endpoint security, auditing, and IT support within a professional enterprise setting.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of senior IT staff, the IT Intern will participate and learn to manage Windows environment.

Endpoint Management & Patching
  • Gain hands-on experience deploying and maintaining Windows 11 updates using tools like Ivanti Security Controls and SCCM/MECM, with occasional after-hours work (weeknights/weekends) to minimize user impact.
  • Help monitor patch deployments to ensure devices are secure.
  • Assist in the deployment of new software, application updates, and workstation hardware refreshes.
Data Analysis & Reporting
  • Learn to run and distribute reports on software inventory, hardware health, and patch compliance.
  • Use Microsoft Excel to organize and validate IT data, gaining experience with pivot tables, formulas, and conditional formatting.
  • Compare data across different systems (Active Directory, SCCM, Ivanti) to ensure records are accurate.
Technical Troubleshooting
  • Develop your troubleshooting skills by resolving common Windows 11 issues, including performance lags, printer connectivity, and application errors.
  • Learn to use professional diagnostic tools such as Event Viewer, Task Manager, and Command Prompt.
  • Gain exposure to PowerShell by using basic scripts to automate data collection and administrative tasks.
Documentation & Process
  • Help create and update how to documentation for common technical fixes and patching procedures.
  • Practice professional escalation by documenting your troubleshooting steps before handing off complex issues to senior engineers.

Minimum Qual Requirements

For Assignment Level I: Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school. For Assignment Level II (Information Technology): Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow): Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications. Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
