Amazon is seeking an Application Engineer with strong system design skills to join our Checkout Engineering team in Austin, TX. This role will focus on two key areas: (1) payment systems across all WFM stores globally, and (2) international point-of-sale (POS) software integration for WFM locations in Canada and the UK.
The ideal candidate will own the "how" of delivering robust, scalable solutions, while contributing significantly to the "what" of our payment and POS systems. You will be the technical driving force behind implementation strategies and best practices, playing a key role in shaping the design and development of these critical systems.
Key job responsibilities
Leading technical design discussions that impact payment processing and international POS integration
Implementing critical components of payment and POS systems
Creating design specifications for complex integration points between payment providers and POS systems
Establishing patterns for automated testing strategies and monitoring solutions
Developing automated alerting systems based on transaction log analysis, with the ability to identify both present and absent critical data elements in payment flows
Collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet business requirements
Reviewing and providing guidance on technical designs and implementations
A day in the life
As an Application Engineer, your day centers on driving operational excellence within our SAFe framework. You'll tackle a prioritized backlog of improvements, focusing on system performance, and reliability. Collaborating with vendors and cross-functional teams, you'll progress high-priority items while providing daily support for critical POS functions. You'll participate in SAFe ceremonies, and engage in architecture discussions. Your expertise will be crucial in mentoring junior members and translating stakeholder requirements into innovative technical solutions that propel our global retail operations forward.
About the team
We are responsible for two critical areas of WFM's global technology infrastructure: in-store payment systems across all WFM locations (US, Canada, and UK) and Point of Sale (POS) systems for our international stores. Our payments charter covers all in-store payment processing, while our international POS focus ensures smooth operations in Canadian and UK stores. We collaborate with payment providers, POS vendors, and internal teams across WFM and Amazon. Our mission is to deliver reliable, secure payment solutions and POS operations that power millions of in-store transactions daily.Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
Demonstrated ability to design large-scale distributed systems, preferably in payment systems or POS
Strong understanding of system architecture patterns and integration approaches
Experience with microservices architecture and API design
Experience with agile development methodologies
Experience designing monitoring and alerting systems for critical business applicationsExperience designing or implementing payment processing systems
Experience with retail POS systems
Understanding of payment security standards (e.g., PCI DSS) and compliance requirements
Experience with high-availability systems and performance optimization
Familiarity with retail technology ecosystems
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Previous experience in grocery or retail technology
