Job summary

Polar Consulting in Chicago is seeking a Utility Planning & Market Strategy Associate to support IRP, power supply planning, and market strategy engagements across the United States. You will develop forecasts, evaluate resource options, and translate findings into actionable planning recommendations for municipal utilities, co-ops, and investor-owned utilities.

Candidates should bring 2+ years of relevant experience, strong quantitative skills, and proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of relevant professional experience in utility, energy, consulting, or related sectors.
• Foundational understanding of the electric utility industry, generation, transmission, wholesale markets, and regulation.
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills with the ability to organize and evaluate complex datasets.
• Strong Excel & PowerPoint; experience building financial/planning models is beneficial.
• Strong written and verbal communication; able to explain concepts to diverse audiences.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
• Bachelor's degree in economics, business, engineering, finance, public policy, data analytics, or related field.

Responsibilities

• Support IRP and long-term power supply strategies.
• Assist with load forecasts, resource portfolios, capacity positions, energy requirements, and reserve margins.
• Evaluate generation, storage, transmission, and other resource options.
• Develop analytical workbooks, planning models, scenario inputs, and datasets.
• Conduct scenario analyses around load growth, prices, retirements, renewables, and electrification.
• Research wholesale energy and market developments.
• Translate market developments into planning implications.
• Support regulatory filings and client presentations.
