Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking a Core Routing/IP Backbone Engineer within the Scientific Networking Division to support ESnet, the DOE‑funded high‑performance network connecting labs, universities, and research institutions worldwide.

You will design, deploy, and operate backbone routing and transport infrastructure, collaborate with multiple stakeholders, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to automation and process improvements to ensure mission‑critical reliability.

Qualifications

• Five+ years designing, deploying and troubleshooting network infrastructure and services.
• Experience in enterprise, service provider, research, or large‑scale WAN/LAN environments.
• Hands‑on experience with IP networking and carrier‑grade services including MPLS, QoS, traffic engineering, L2/L3 VPNs.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and support routing, switching, optical, and transport infrastructure across ESnet networks.
• Configure and troubleshoot IPv4/IPv6, BGP, IS‑IS, MPLS, Segment Routing, RSVP, QoS, and L2/L3 VPNs.
• Support operations, upgrades, incidents, and service restoration.
• Develop automation tools and workflows to improve scalability and reliability.
• Collaborate with engineers, vendors, and stakeholders to deliver network services.
• Participate in project planning, procurement, testing, deployment, and readiness.
• Create and maintain technical documentation and standards.
• Lead process improvements and provide technical guidance to stakeholders.
• Participate in on‑call rotations for support.
