Job summary

The Office of the Colorado State Public Defender seeks an Investigator I to learn and perform duties in criminal defense investigations under supervision. You will organize case files, interview witnesses, gather records, and support attorneys in trial preparation while adhering to ethical guidelines.

Responsibilities include maintaining documentation, coordinating with defense teams, and conducting fieldwork across Colorado with occasional travel.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, social sciences, psychology, criminology, legal studies, political science, international relations, public relations, or communications
• Must have demonstrated written and oral communications skills
• Four years of equivalent training or relevant experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis

Responsibilities

• Learns to organize and prepare case files to manage investigations and attorney files
• Gathers information through witness interviews and document reviews
• Collaborates with attorneys to develop investigation strategies
• Maintains timely communications with attorneys and tracks case progress
• Maintains thorough documentation of work and adheres to ethical standards
• Performs fieldwork including obtaining records, interviewing witnesses, and preparing interview reports
• Assists in preparing exhibits and coordinating witness appearances for trials
• Travels as needed within Colorado and occasionally outside the state
