Job summary

SMS group Brandenburg is seeking a Materials Specialist to manage inventory, forecast needs, quote with vendors, create POs, and support logistics across the team. You will work with Supervisors, Estimators, and Shop Supervisors to ensure timely materials and accurate BOMs while maintaining safe, efficient operations on site.

The role requires 3+ years in materials, an Associate’s degree, strong Excel skills, and the ability to coordinate across multiple stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in related field preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in materials.
• Valid driver license.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Strong computer skills, especially Excel.
• Good interpersonal skills and must be able to work with minimal supervision.
• Strong leadership and team-building qualities.
• OSHA10 certification, or must complete after hire.

Responsibilities

• Be a safety-minded worker with good attendance.
• Determine products and services needed with Supervisors and Estimators.
• Request minimum quotes per Purchasing Policy and attach to PO.
• Enter POs in GSS and maintain PO folders with related documents.
• Ensure POs contain material type, burnout specs, finishes and drawings.
• Meet with customers and vendors to discuss parts and services.
• Work with Estimator when obtaining materials after quoting.
• Coordinate with Shop Supervisors for material delivery scheduling.
• Investigate discrepancies between Purchasing and Receiving.
• Plan bill of materials and expedite parts/material availability.
• Update BOM, routers and lot sizes with Operations/PMs.
• Control plant inventory and optimize turnover; align with cycle counts and WIP.
• Monitor safety stock and establish order policies; pursue VMI/JIT.
• Identify local indirect material sources.
• Manage indirect supplier selection based on total cost of ownership.
• Support purchasing agreements with Regional Purchasing Manager.
• Analyze supply constraints to support daily operations.
• Shipping and receiving duties as needed.
• Operate HD scan lab and track samples.
• Drive forklift to stage and put away inventory.
• Occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
• All other assigned duties.
