Job summary

Austin Lighthouse for the Blind operates a warehouse and inventory program to support employment services for people who are blind or visually impaired. The role involves receiving, storing, and tracking stock, verifying incoming items, and maintaining accurate inventory records in a fast-paced environment.

Knowledge of equipment, materials, and basic math is essential. Physical duties include lifting items and standing for long periods; forklift certification may be pursued after hire.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of materials, production processes, and quality-control basics.
  • Basic mathematics; familiarity with SCALE.
  • Ability to work in a warehouse environment and follow safety rules.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, stores, merchandise, and compiles stock records in warehouse.
  • Counts, sorts, or weighs incoming items to verify receipt.
  • Examines stock for conformity to specifications and stores articles accordingly.
  • Prepares periodic or perpetual inventory and requisitions for orders.
  • Compiles reports on stock usage, inventory counts, and damages.
  • May cut stock to site to fill orders.
  • Transfers product for replenishment or deadstock and researches discrepancies.

Austin Lighthouse for the Blind a non-profit organization, was founded in 1934 by Dr. Henry L. Hilgartner and other civic-minded citizens of Austin to provide a setting where blind men and women could come to learn skills and create products that were sold door to door.

Today, Austin Lighthouse for the Blind stays true to the mission established in 1934 by providing opportunities for economic and personal independence for people who are blind, visually impaired, or deaf blind by creating, sustaining, and improving employment. Qualifications

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective protection of data & property.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Basic Mathematics
  • Knowledge of SCALE
Skills
  • Actively looking for ways to help people.
  • Communicating effectively in writing and orally as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
  • Basic computer skills in using Microsoft Excel.
Abilities
  • The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing or in alternate form.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with supervisor, coworkers, and other departments.
  • Have strong dexterity capabilities to grasp, assemble, and manipulate objects.
  • The ability to stand or sit for 7-8 hours a day.
  • The ability to lift 10-50lbs items/products repeatedly.
  • The ability to endure extreme temperatures in a warehouse setting.
  • The ability to navigate safely in small or large areas/environment.
  • The ability to become forklift certified within the company.
Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
