Job summary

WVU Hospitals in Morgantown, WV is seeking an Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM) Technologist. The role trains in didactic and clinical components and progresses to independent monitoring across modalities.

The position requires a Neuroscience-related bachelor's degree and BLS certification within 30 days of hire; you will work under supervision initially and grow to independent practice while integrating with surgical teams.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Operates under direct technical supervision for procedures not yet achieved.
• Operates under indirect supervision for procedures aligned with competence.
• Reviews planned intraoperative procedures to determine monitoring needs.
• Prepares equipment and supplies per requested monitoring modalities.
• Communicates effectively with intraoperative team to maximize monitoring results.
• Sets up monitoring equipment in OR to ensure patient electrical safety.
• Applies electrodes and completes testing setup per policy.
• Discusses baseline recordings with oversight neurologist, surgeon and supervisor as needed.
• Monitors neurophysiological central/peripheral function during procedures.
• Maintains communication with surgeon, neurologist, anesthesiologist and nursing staff.
• Recognizes events and communicates test changes per policy.
• Documents all related communications, status, anesthetic adjustments, and monitoring changes.
• Removes recording/stimulating electrodes and checks electrode sites for issues.
• Restocks equipment and supplies as needed.
• Charges and logs patient information per policy.
• Learns anatomy, physiology, and pathology relevant to intraoperative monitoring.
• Prepares and provides educational in-servicing as directed by leadership.
• Performs IOM procedures in OR or Ambulatory Surgery Center per policy.

Job description

Completes on-the-job training in both didactic and clinical components of Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM). Performs IOM procedures appropriate to demonstrated competence including test setup, electrode application, data acquisition, and results communication. Works under direct technical supervision for all procedures for which competence has not been achieved. May work under indirect technical supervision for those procedures for which competence has been demonstrated according to hospital policy and procedure. Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The goal of this position is to become competent in all applicable monitoring modalities to function as an independent IOM Technologist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

• 1. Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience or related health science field.
• 2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• 1. Works under direct technical supervision and training during all IOM procedures for which competency has not been achieved.
• 2. Works under indirect technical supervision during all IOM procedures appropriate to their level of competence.
• 3. Reviews planned intraoperative procedures relative to patient history to determine structures at risk and monitoring modalities required.
• 4. Prepares equipment and supplies for assigned cases according to monitoring modalities requested and/or required.
• 5. Communicates effectively with all intraoperative team members as needed to maximize monitoring results.
• 6. Sets up monitoring equipment in the operating room appropriately to ensure patient electrical safety.
• 7. Applies electrodes and completes testing setup according to departmental policy and procedure.
• 8. Discusses baseline recordings with oversight neurologist, surgeon, and technical supervisor as needed.
• 9. Monitors neurophysiological central/peripheral functioning throughout the operative procedure.
• 10. Maintains communication with surgeon, neurologist, anesthesiologist, and nursing staff throughout the procedure as needed.
• 11. Recognizes clinically significant events and communicates changes in test results in a manner consistent with departmental policy and procedure.
• 12. Documents all relative communication, physiological status, anesthetic adjustments, and changes in monitoring results.
• 13. Removes and discards all recording and stimulating electrodes, assesses electrode placements sites for potential problems, and notifies appropriate personnel if electrode site problems are identified.
• 14. Restocks equipment and supplies as needed.
• 15. Charges and logs patient information according to hospital and departmental policy and procedure.
• 16. Learns and maintains knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and pathology relative to intraoperative monitoring studies.
• 17. Prepares and provides educational in-servicing as directed by clinical and administrative leadership.
• 18. Performs IOM procedures in accordance with policy and procedure guidelines in the Operating Room or Ambulatory Surgery Center.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• 1. Required to frequently stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• 2. Occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds
• 3. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
