Job summary

Puyallup School District in Advance is seeking an Interpreter Tutor - ASL. This PESPA Level 7 position provides about 6.25 hours per day, 7:15AM to 2:00PM, on a 191-day calendar, Monday through Friday, to support our district's deaf and hard of hearing program and to facilitate communication between students and instructors.

The interpreter/tutor will convey teacher instruction and intent, assist students with daily activities, and provide voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice support, collaborating

Qualifications

  • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) required.
  • Completion of an interpreter training program or RID/EIPA credentials preferred.
  • Prior job-related experience as an educational interpreter is preferred.
  • Minimum EIPA score 4.0 plus passing EIPA written test is required.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication between deaf/hard-of-hearing students and others during instruction.
  • Convey teacher instruction and intent through sign language and voicing as needed.
  • Assist students with daily instructional activities and provide sign-to-voice support.

The purpose of this position is to support our district's deaf and hard of hearing program. The job of interpreter/tutor is done for the purpose of facilitating communication between persons who are deaf and hard of hearing and others; conveying teacher instruction and intent; assisting students with daily instructional activities; providing voice to sign and sign to voice support; participating as a team member to plan, review and share information; and serving as a resource to other school personnel requiring assistance with hard of hearing and deaf person/s. May work primarily with one student. Flexibility to ride the bus.

Job Requirements/Qualifications
  • Fluent in ASL.
  • Completion of an Interpreter Training program.
  • Prior job-related experience with background in an educational interpreter training preferred.
  • Minimum 4.0 score on Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) and the EIPA written test with a passing score.
    • At minimum, the Written taken and passed with the Performance taken and in process of receiving score

OR

  • National Interpreter Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and the EIPA written test with a passing score.
    • An educational interpreter who has not successfully achieved the performance standard required by RCW 28A.410.271 may provide or continue providing educational interpreter services to students for one calendar year after receipt of his or her most recent educational interpreter assessment results, or eighteen months after completing his or her most recent educational interpreter assessment, whichever period is longer, if he or she can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the employing school or school district, ongoing efforts to successfully achieve the required performance standard.
