Indiana University seeks an International Services Advisor (DSO) in Indianapolis to interpret U.S. immigration laws and counsel international students, scholars and staff on their stay in the United States and at the university.

The role requires a Bachelor's degree with 2 years of advising experience; a Master’s degree is preferred. You will develop policies, ensure compliance, and collaborate across IU Indianapolis departments to support international education initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret complex U.S. immigration laws, regulations, policies and procedures and advise IU Indianapolis's international students, scholars and staff on stay in the United States and at the university.
  • Develop and maintain personal and office staff expertise with U.S. laws and regulations governing international students, scholars and staff.
  • Plan, develop, schedule, conduct and evaluate programming to educate international students, scholars and staff on current U.S. regulations.
  • Ensure information is reported to DHS timely and that immigration documentation is adjudicated accurately.
  • Serve as liaison to local or state government agencies regarding issues related to international students, scholars and staff.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS (IN-INTP-IUINA)

The International Services Advisor serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) authorized by the Department of Homeland Security. This role interprets complex U.S. immigration laws, regulations, policies, and procedures as applied to individual international students at Indiana University (IU) Indianapolis.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Ensures the university complies with federal monitoring and reporting requirements.
  • Actively participates in the development, maintenance, and growth of staff expertise in the laws and regulations governing international students and in promulgating IU policies and procedures that ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Serves as an immigration expert to other IU Indianapolis departments.
General Responsibilities
  • Interprets complex U.S. immigration laws, regulations, policies and procedures and exercises professional judgment to advise and counsel IU Indianapolis's international students, scholars and/or staff on all aspects of their stay in the United States and at the university.
  • Develops and maintains personal and office staff expertise with U.S. laws and regulations governing international students, scholars and/or staff.
  • Plans, develops, schedules, conducts and evaluates programming designed to educate international students, scholars and/or staff and other IU Indianapolis departments on current U.S. regulations governing international students, scholars, and/or staff.
  • Ensures the required information is reported to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in a timely manner and that necessary immigration documentation needed to maintain legal status of international students, scholars and/or staff is adjudicated accurately and effectively.
  • Serves as liaison to local or state government agencies regarding issues related to international students, scholars and/or staff.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in a related field)

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
