Job summary

New York Air Brake is offering a summer internship at the Kansas City Service Center for students in their junior or senior year. You will contribute to manufacturing improvements for locomotive and freight car braking systems, working both independently and in project teams with regular feedback.

Interns begin mid-May through mid-August, typically 40 hours per week, and participate in events while presenting a final project to leaders.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing Industrial/Mechanical Engineering with a 3.0+ GPA.
  • Entering junior year in relevant program.
  • Availability May–August, 40 hours/week.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate product improvement or cost optimization by trials and reporting.
  • Assist with machine shutdowns and start-ups.
  • Monitor and optimize process quality, conditions and variability.
  • Provide technical support for key departments.
  • Apply problem-solving skills to achieve department initiatives.
  • Support capacity increases, safety, quality, and cost reductions.
  • Assist in capital projects from scoping to installation.
  • Contribute to plant studies and design of final project installation.

You will work individually and as part of a project team while receiving regular feedback in preparation for a final presentation to company leaders.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Functions
  • Evaluate product improvement or cost optimization projects by conducting trials, including development of trial plans and authoring trial reports
  • Assist with machine shutdowns and start-ups
  • Monitor, assess, analyze, and optimize process quality and conditions
  • Monitor, assess, and analyze process variability
  • Provide technical support for key departments
  • Utilize problem-solving and analytical skills to achieve department initiatives.
  • Provide process engineering support to increase manufacturing capacity, improve safety/quality, and reduce manufacturing costs.
  • Leverage process engineering capability to support production process continuous improvement using operational excellence tools.
  • Support capital project work from scoping through installation under technical supervision
  • Assist in the design and technical supervision of plant studies and contribute to the design of the final project installation.
Skills and Competencies
  • Understanding of 5S methodology and Lean manufacturing principles.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
Education:

Degree: Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology with a 3.0 or higher GPA

Minimum Year: Entering Junior year
