Job summary

First Merchants Corporation offers a 12-week paid Summer Internship Program in Indianapolis, designed for full-time degree-seeking students. The internship exposes you to commercial banking, credit analysis, portfolio management, and relationship-building while you work on real projects and attend leadership events.

You will gain hands-on experience, receive mentorship from professionals, and participate in a community service project as part of the program.

Qualifications

• Be a full-time Bachelor (or higher) degree-seeking student at an accredited college or university.
• Be available to work 40 hours per week from May 17th- August 6th, 2027.
• Be authorized to work in the United States.
• Have demonstrated interest in the industry and/or specific area of interest.
• Possess a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
• Be able and willing to travel periodically throughout the First Merchants footprint, if applicable.

Responsibilities

• The Commercial Banking Intern will learn the roles within commercial banking and the products and services the bank provides commercial customers.
• The intern will gain skills in assessing credit risk, analyzing financial data, portfolio management, and the team-based credit decision process.
• The intern will also learn the commercial banking sales cycle, relationship banking, whole-bank selling techniques, and commercial banking sales management, while gaining hands on sales experience.
• Complete trend reports for borrowing base certificates.
• Complete covenant monitoring and annual credit reviews.
• Attend and participate in loan committees and opportunity memorandum discussions.
• Partner with relationship managers on prospecting activities and participate in client calls.
• Monitor loan maturity dates and recommend renewal strategies.

Summer Internship Program Overview

First Merchants internship opportunities are available in a variety of business areas including Credit Administration, Commercial Banking, Consumer Banking, Treasury Management, Private Wealth, Technology, Human Resources, Marketing, Risk, Operations, and other business functions.

Department Internship Duties & Responsibilities

In addition to the learning objectives, all interns will participate in a coordinated community service project. Interns will have an opportunity to network with Executive and Senior Leadership at our Intern Meet & Greet event and will present a summary of their experience at the conclusion of the internship program.
