Job summary

Michigan Paving and Materials, a CRH company, is seeking a Construction Operations Intern – Roadways. Interns will gain experience in the construction industry through field and office experiences, working alongside safety, quality control, project managers and road crews to prepare for a career in road construction.

Responsibilities include learning sourcing, bidding, contracts, asphalt plant operations, and exposure to project management, scheduling and basic finance concepts.

• Pursuing a bachelor’s in construction management, engineering, or business management with interest in heavy construction.

Responsibilities

• Learn about sourcing, bidding and the build process for construction projects.
• Work through the bidding process and with estimators.
• Set up contracts and subcontracts.
• Spend time with Plant Operators running asphalt plants.
• Work with yard crew, loader operator, scale operations and assist with general maintenance of the plant.
• Work on a construction and/or prep crew and learn how foremen prepare for the job.
• Learn about construction equipment – various uses and skills required.
• Work with operations manager and finance on monthly reporting.
• Understand job cost, workload and scheduling.
• Understand basics with P&L and financial statements.
• Spend time at an aggregate location to understand operations and logistics.
• Learn about materials available in quarries and pits.

Education

Construction Operations Intern – Roadways

Interns will gain experience in the construction industry and prepare them for a career in the road construction industry through field and office experiences working alongside safety, quality control, project managers, superintendents and road crews, production facilities, business analysts, sales and engineering.

Key Experiences

• Project management
  • Learn about sourcing, bidding and the build process for construction projects.
  • Work through the bidding process and with estimators.
  • Set up contracts and subcontracts.
• Asphalt plant operations
  • Spend time working with Plant Operators running asphalt plants.
  • Work with yard crew, loader operator, scale operations and assist with general maintenance of the plant.
• Construction crews
  • Working on a construction and/or prep crew.
  • Spend time with foreman learning how to prepare for the job and set up job.
  • Learn about construction equipment – various uses and skills required.

  • Spend time working at an aggregate location and understanding basic operations and logistics

Education And Experience

Working towards a bachelor’s in construction management, engineering, or business management with interest in heavy construction such as site-work, roads or environmental.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a work shift of at least eight hours per day.
• Employee is occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb.
• This position requires walking, standing, bending, twisting, sitting and lifting
• Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs without assistance
• Ability to operate equipment under temperature extremes and for extended hours of time.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks in an efficient manner.
• Exposure to dust, dirt grease and noise.
• Work can be performed at heights, requiring the employee to climb ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project need(s) and demand(s).

Work Environment

• Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. This position will work outdoors on a job site in extreme weather conditions.
• Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
• Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
• Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions.
• Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt and concrete.
