Job summary

Gray AES in Lexington, KY is seeking a Civil Engineering Intern for Summer 2027 to assist in developing civil design drawings, site plans, grading and utility layouts under supervision. You will support site data compilation, perform basic earthwork and drainage calculations, prepare field reports and RFIs, and use Civil3D to create 2D/3D models, with exposure to safety and collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing Bachelor's degree in civil engineering is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering principles (site layout, grading, drainage, utility coordination).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and MS Office; exposure to Bluebeam or stormwater modeling is a plus.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and eagerness to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing civil design drawings and specifications (site plans, grading, utility layouts).
  • Support compilation and analysis of site data (topography, access, utilities, zoning).
  • Help prepare basic earthwork, drainage, and utility quantities under supervision.
  • Prepare field reports, submittals, and RFIs; maintain logs/documentation.
  • Use Civil3D to create 2D/3D models; assist in site visits for data collection.
  • Review civil codes/standards for compliance and assist with coordination.

Qualifications

What we expect… (Essential Functions)

  • Assist in the development of civil design drawings and specifications, including site plans, grading, and utility layouts.
  • Support the compilation and analysis of site data, such as topography, access, utilities, and zoning regulations.
  • Help prepare basic calculations for earthwork, drainage, and utility quantities under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Participate in the preparation of field reports, submittals, and RFIs, maintaining logs and documentation.
  • Use Civil3D software to create 2D and 3D models of infrastructure components, with support from senior designers.
  • Assist in site visits and field observations to collect data and verify design accuracy.
  • Assist in reviewing civil codes and standards for compliance and prepare documentation for internal and external review.
  • Collaborate with project teams, contractors, and consultants to support design coordination and project execution.
  • Other duties as assigned.
