Summary

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Police Trainee is responsible for completing the CMPD Academy and passing the Basic Law Enforcement Training to become certified sworn law enforcement providing protection, policing, patrolling, and investigation. Police Trainees participate in a structured training and certification program and perform entry-level law enforcement work under close supervision.

Applicants applying for Intermediate Police Trainee must have completed a North Carolina (NC) Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program within the past 12 months OR currently possess an active NC Law Enforcement Certification issued by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and not currently meet the qualifications for our Lateral Police Trainee position.

Note: This program is not available to applicants with out-of-state certification.

Selected Intermediate applicants must successfully complete a 10-week Academy, followed by a 15-week PTO training course. This allows qualified applicants who have already completed a BLET to bypass the full 26-week academy and repeat BLET.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participate in a structured law enforcement training academy that incorporates an adult learning environment and follows a paramilitary model to gain knowledge of entry-level law enforcement responsibilities.
  • Participate in a field training program with a field training officer, applying techniques learned in the training academy.
  • Meet all training requirements established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice and Training Standards Commission and CMPD.
  • Perform entry-level law enforcement work involving protection of life and property, law enforcement, traffic control, crime prevention, and related responsibilities.
  • Maintain logs, records, reports, and files.
  • Keep tools and equipment in safe condition; adhere to policies and procedures.
  • Work with community members on crime reduction projects.
  • Assist in developing crime reduction programs upon becoming a Police Officer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • At least 20 years old
  • U.S. Citizen
  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
  • No DWI or DUI in the past five years
  • Pass physical ability test and OSHA fit test
  • Pass extensive background investigation
  • Honorable Military Discharge, if applicable
  • Approval by Civil Service Board
  • Normal color vision and 20/30 visual acuity
  • Pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Completed or currently enrolled in NC BLET within the past 12 months OR possess active NC Law Enforcement Certification
  • For current officers, at least two years of sworn experience with comparable duties
Licensing/Certifications
  • Valid NC or SC Driver's License or ability to obtain one
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of law enforcement practices and safety principles
  • Business math, record-keeping, and report writing
  • Legal knowledge applicable to law enforcement
  • Customer service and communication skills
  • Proficiency with office technology and law enforcement systems
  • Ability to work with diverse communities and learn court procedures
ADA and Other Requirements

Positions require physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions.
