Summary of Job Duties:

Position Summary:

The Phlebotomist supports all sections of the Clinical Outpatient Laboratory through proper phlebotomy techniques, specimen accessioning, processing, and related activities. Responsibilities include using correct blood collection tubes, matching identifiers, obtaining blood samples, resolving specimen and patient issues, and following all departmental policies. The position also assists with access coordinator duties and training new employees.

This is a split position with a Patient Care Tech role, supporting patient care activities such as vital signs, EKGs, dressing changes, patient interviews, and administrative tasks like scheduling. The PCT works under RN supervision and within departmental standards.

Qualifications:

Required:

• High School diploma/GED
• 2 years experience as a phlebotomist
• Excellent customer service, communication, empathy, respect for privacy, and attention to detail
• Successful completion of patient care technician course within 3 months

Preferred:

• CPR, CAN, PBT, MLA, or CPT Certification
• Experience in clinical laboratory and as a medical assistant
• CPR Certification/Licensed

Responsibilities:

• Collect blood specimens using venipuncture or capillary methods, ensuring minimal discomfort
• Properly label specimens and document collection details
• Communicate procedures and instructions effectively to patients
• Perform routine maintenance and quality control on equipment
• Manage inventory of supplies
• Follow infection control and safety protocols
• Assist in training new staff
• Collaborate with laboratory and healthcare team members
• Perform other duties as assigned
