Job summary

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking an Intermediate Natural Resources Forestry Specialist to manage forest resource programs in Blackduck, MN. This role involves administering the Fire Prevention and Invasive Species sub-programs, using GIS and ArcGIS for data and maps, and supporting wildfire prevention and suppression efforts.

Responsibilities include reviewing burn permits, training others, and engaging communities through outreach.

Qualifications

• 3 years (36 months) of forestry fieldwork in GIS/data collection, regeneration, or native plant community data.
• 2 years (24 months) of any three forestry fieldwork tasks plus 1 year in program-level/lead duties.
• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degrees may substitute required fieldwork with specified months.

Responsibilities

• Administer Fire Prevention Sub-program tasks in the assigned area.
• Direct Invasive Species Sub-program tasks.
• Interact with Area/Region/State staff across sub-programs.
• Use GIS and 4Trees to input data, analyze, and map forest resources.
• Engage in wildfire prevention and suppression activities.
• Review burn permit requests and approve/deny based on fire weather knowledge.
• Provide fire training to foresters and fire departments.
• Participate in outreach events promoting sustainable forestry.
• Operate vehicles and equipment as needed.
