Job summary

Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking an entry-level technician to support operations within the Materials Fabrication Facility. You will perform laboratory-scale material processing independently or under supervision, handling heat treatment, metal forming, alloy melting, and surface treatments.

Responsibilities include following procedures, recording parameters, assisting in equipment operation and preventive maintenance, and communicating with engineers through briefings and standard forms.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with 4+ years relevant experience; or Associates degree with 2+ years; or Journeyman's papers with 2+ years; or Naval Nuclear Propulsion Operator qualification with 2+ years; or Bachelor's degree in a related field.
• Alternate combinations of education and experience as listed in the job description.

Job Description

The Materials Development Laboratory Unit is seeking an entry-level technician to support operations within its Materials Fabrication Facility (MFF). The successful candidate will perform laboratory-scale material processing operations independently or under the direction of experienced technicians and engineers.

Typical work will include:

• Air and vacuum heat treatment of metal alloys
• Support basic metal forming operations (e.g., rolling and forging)
• Metal alloy melting activities (e.g., induction or arc melting)
• Performing supervised acid/chemical surface treatment (e.g., etching, pickling, anodizing)

Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate equipment under supervision.
• Follow written procedures, sponsor specifications, and internal work instructions for processing various alloys.
• Record process parameters and results accurately in logs, databases, or Microsoft Office tools.
• Support basic troubleshooting (e.g., identifying simple equipment issues) and preventive maintenance tasks with guidance from senior staff.
• Assist in the safe operation of equipment such as mechanical vacuum pumps, diffusion pumps, hydraulic systems, and PLC/HMI-controlled systems, as trained.
• Communicate with laboratory engineers and work sponsors through job scoping meetings, pre-job briefings, and task completion using established forms and templates.

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or Associates degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Journeymans Papers in a related field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Qualification as a Naval Nuclear Propulsion Operator (or commercial nuclear equivalent) and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related field.

Preferred Skills

• Prior experience in: Heat treatment processes (air or vacuum furnaces); Metal forming (forging, rolling); Metal alloying melting (induction or arc melting); and/or Acid/chemical surface treatments (etching, pickling, anodizing)
• Demonstrated mechanical or electrical aptitude (through coursework, hands-on experience, or hobbies)
• Prior troubleshooting and/or preventive maintenance experience on equipment including mechanical vacuum pumps, diffusion pumps, hydraulic systems, PLCs, HMI control systems, electrical systems
• Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
• Familiarity with metal alloys and additively manufactured materials
• Understanding of basic safety practices (electrical safety, arc flash awareness, LOTO, chemical use, waste disposal, PPE )
• Proficiency with Microsoft Suite of products (i.e. Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.)

Pay Range

$63,900.00 - $97,800.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.
