Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical, engineering or science field with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree in a related technical, engineering or science field with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Doctorate degree in a related technical, engineering, science field; or eligibility as Advanced Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or RPCO Engineer at the Company.

Responsibilities

  • Research on corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking behavior of materials utilizing state-of-the-art electrochemical test technologies and equipment.
  • Interaction with corrosion technicians in a laboratory setting to conduct experiments.
  • Working with materials scientists to assess and develop new alloy systems.
  • Supporting resolution of queries concerning selection, application, and performance of materials for new/existing power plant designs including corrosion and detrimental materials issues.
  • Perform materials development and testing for new applications or where performance information is unavailable.
  • Reviewing design documents and vendor/shipyard submittals for materials-related concerns.
  • Providing support for materials manufacturing issues.
  • Support ongoing test programs including test method development.

Job Description

Fleet Materials Applications and Evaluations (FMAE) is currently seeking candidates for an Advanced Materials Engineer.

The mission of the FMAE unit is to provide exceptional expertise in plant materials evaluations, applications, development, and metallography to address critical needs of the Naval Reactors Program.This work directly supports the fleet and informs strategic/design decisions. The successful applicant should have a strong understanding of the fundamentals of corrosion science and metallurgical processes as well as microstructural characterization techniques and fractographic evaluations.Key responsibilities will include:

  • Research on corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking behavior of materials utilizing state-of-the-art electrochemical test technologies and equipment,

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, science field; or Currently an Advanced Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.

Preferred Skills
  • Familiarity with materials processing, manufacturing processes, and prior experience in mechanical testing of materials,
  • Experience/understanding of environmentally assisted cracking, fatigue and mechanical behavior in nickel-based alloys and stainless steels.
  • Experience with corrosion/metallurgy of carbon/alloy steels, stainless steels, and nickel-based alloys
  • Ability to team/collaborate with a broad range ofprofessional disciplines including scientists, engineers, and statisticians
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

Pay Range

$86,100.00 - $134,600.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets.
