Job summary

The Science Autoclave Facility (SAF) at the Knolls site is a state-of-the-art materials research facility focusing on autoclave testing of metallic alloys. The role blends materials/mechanical engineering with hands-on lab operations to study environmental degradation of materials, including corrosion and related phenomena.

Responsibilities include designing new tests, ensuring quality data, data processing with cross-functional teams, and presenting findings to stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical, engineering or science field with 4+ years of relevant experience; or Master's with 2+ years; or Doctorate in a related field.
  • PhD preferred but not required; related engineering fields acceptable.

  • Scope, propose, and design new tests with a team of experts to support customer needs.
  • Daily interactions with lab operations to ensure quality data is collected.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to process data and evaluate test specimens.
  • Report writing and presenting to stakeholders.
  • Learn and participate in environmental/safety/compliance/procurement aspects of operating a laboratory.
  • Work with experts to design equipment, propose data acquisition changes, and build test stations.

Job Description

The Science Autoclave Facility (SAF) at the Knolls site is a state-of-the-art materials research facility specializing in autoclave testing of metallic alloys. The main purpose of the laboratory is to study environmental degradation of materials (i.e. corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, etc.). The successful candidate will combine materials/mechanical engineering knowledge with the practical aspects of laboratory testing and operations.

For example, expected job duties include:

  • Scoping, proposing, and designing/developing new tests with a team of experts to support customer needs.
  • Daily interactions with lab operations personnel to ensure quality data is collected.
  • Working with multi-disciplined organizations to process data and evaluate test specimens.
  • Report writing and presenting to/aligning stakeholders.
  • Learning and participating in the environmental/safety/compliance/procurement aspects of operating a laboratory.
  • Working with experts to design new equipment, propose data acquisition changes, and build new test stations.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering, science field; or Currently an Advanced Reactor Training Engineer, Refueling Engineer, or Field (RPCO) Engineer at the Company.

Preferred Skills
  • Materials testing knowledge
  • Familiarity with high pressure / high temperature testing equipment
  • Familiarity with data acquisition software and instrumentation, preferably Labview
  • Knowledge of test equipment design/experience with 3d modeling software
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Willingness to learn from experienced laboratory personnel
  • PhD preferred but not a requirement. Can be materials, mechanical, or related engineering field.

Pay Range

$86,100.00 - $134,600.00 annually
Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
