Job summary

Penn Contractors Inc. is seeking a part-time Designer to support design and cabinetry projects. You will work with Remodeling Consultants to move projects toward construction agreements, create conceptual sketches, and develop cabinetry designs while documenting selections.

The role emphasizes client interaction, showroom partnerships, and collaboration with the production team to ensure accurate implementation of designs, color and material choices, and timely project progress.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Architectural/Interior Design or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; 10 years’ experience acceptable as substitute.
  • Professional interior design certification (AIA, NCIDQ, NKBA) highly preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years design and drafting in a construction-related field.

Responsibilities

  • Assist RC with design software to create conceptual sketches.
  • Develop preliminary and final cabinetry designs.
  • Create and refine project models for client visualization.
  • Document product selections and pricing in company database.
  • Coordinate showroom visits and maintain stocked samples.

Designer, Penn Contractors
Position Summary

The designer role at Penn Contractors is complex and critical to our success as a design & build company. Our designer assists our clients with design and product selections, our Remodeling Consultants (RC) in moving our projects towards a construction agreement (CA), and our production team with a successful implementation of our designs.

Essential Functions:
  • With input from RC, use design software to create conceptual sketches to help define a client’s project vision prior to engaging our architect.
  • Develop preliminary and final cabinetry designs.
  • In both architectural and cabinetry applications, create, refine, and share project models to help clients visualize and understand their projects.
  • Document product selections in company database.
  • Document and confirm pricing for product selections.
  • Secure approval for product selections and any needed product revisions.
  • With input from our Production Manager (PM), order finishes, cabinetry, and fixtures as needed.
  • Work within Penn's operational, philosophical, and financial systems to ensure a fantastic client experience.
  • Accompany clients to area showrooms to guide and support their selection process.
  • Build relationships with area showrooms to ensure a pleasant and productive client experience.
  • Ensure that Penn's showroom is stocked with appropriate product samples.
  • Attend in-house preconstruction meetings.
  • Facilitate communication between client, production, and sales staff throughout project lifecycle.
Abilities & Attributes:
  • Desire to continually learn about products and evolving design styles.
  • Great customer service personality and skillset; open, warm, supportive, empathetic, detailed, thorough, and self-managing personality.
  • Ability to discuss design decisions, how they may impact budget, and an understanding of why this is important.
  • Schedule Flexibility. This position is currently 20 to 30 hours a week and may increase.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of residential construction and cabinetry design principles, Microsoft Office Suite, proficiency in Chief Architect, 20/20, and similar design programs.
  • Visual design skills including proportion and aesthetics, layout, color, lighting, and materials selection.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in the following areas: presentations, sales, marketing, relationship-building, customer service, problem-solving, organization, time management, and project management.
  • Ability to create aesthetically pleasing and functional architectural and cabinet designs by applying style principles, ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, ability to communicate the vision to the production team.
Education/Experience:
  • Required: Associates Degree in Architectural/Interior Design or related field. Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Alternatively, 10 years’ experience is acceptable substitute for formal education.
  • Professional interior design, AIA, NCIDQ, and/or NKBA certification highly preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years design and drafting experience in a construction-related field.
Schedule/Work Environment:
  • Part-time, 20-30 hours/week (M-F, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.), one-hour unpaid meal/personal period.
  • Approximately 80% in-office design work, 20% jobsite and client meetings.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to distinguish between colors.
