Job summary

Cherry Bekaert Recruiting is seeking an Interim Controller for a six-month engagement in Washington, DC. The role leads accounting operations, financial reporting, audits, budgeting, and month-end close, with focus on process improvements across the finance function.

The position is hybrid (two days onsite, three days remote) and demands strong GAAP knowledge, excellent Excel skills, and prior controller-level leadership in nonprofit or corporate settings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
• 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
• Controller or Assistant Controller experience.
• Strong expertise with Sage Intacct.
• Experience overseeing month-end close and financial reporting.
• Leadership of AP, AR, and grants accounting.
• Advanced Excel skills.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
• Oversee preparation and review of financial statements.
• Supervise AP, AR, and Grants Accounting functions.
• Coordinate external audits with auditors.
• Perform budget-to-actual and variance analysis.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow planning.
• Strengthen accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
• Identify process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
• Provide financial insights to executive leadership.
• Ensure GAAP compliance and accurate reporting.
