Beacon Hill is assisting a mission-driven nonprofit with approximately $20M in annual revenue to hire an Interim Chief Financial Officer. This role oversees all finance and accounting functions, provides strategic financial leadership, and guides a critical transition period.

The CFO will build budgeting processes from the ground up, improve financial reporting, and partner with the executive leadership and Board to stabilize finances and support program growth during this change.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in nonprofit accounting and finance.
  • At least 5 years in senior finance leadership.
  • Experience building and managing complex organizational budgets.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grants, audits, compliance, GAAP.
  • Experience presenting financial data to Boards.
  • Leadership to develop teams and improve operations.
  • Proficiency with Sage Intacct, Excel, and reporting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic financial leadership to ensure long-term stability, sustainability, and growth.
  • Oversee all accounting, finance, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting functions.
  • Lead and mentor a growing finance team, fostering staff development and operational excellence.
  • Develop, build, and manage the organization's annual operating budget while monitoring variances and forecasting future needs.
  • Manage cash flow, financial planning, and funding allocation across multiple programs and contracts.
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting and maintain the integrity of the general ledger and financial data.
  • Establish and strengthen accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and compliance measures.
  • Oversee grant and government funding reporting requirements and assess financial impacts of new initiatives.
  • Coordinate annual audits and present financial results to executive leadership, finance committees, and the Board.
  • Oversee IRS Form 990 preparation and filing.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Partner with executive leadership on strategic planning and key business decisions.
  • Present financial performance, forecasts, and recommendations to the Board of Directors.

Salary: USD80 - USD90 per hour

Our client, a mission-driven nonprofit organization with approximately $20M in annual revenue, is seeking an experienced Interim Chief Financial Officer to join its executive leadership team. This individual will oversee all finance and accounting functions, provide strategic financial leadership, and help stabilize and strengthen the organization's financial infrastructure during a critical transition period.

The organization is entering budget season and seeks a hands-on finance leader who can build budgeting processes from the ground up, improve financial reporting, and partner closely with executive leadership and the Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic financial leadership to ensure long-term financial stability, sustainability, and growth.
  • Oversee all accounting, finance, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting functions.
  • Lead and mentor a growing finance team, fostering staff development and operational excellence.
  • Develop, build, and manage the organization's annual operating budget while monitoring variances and forecasting future needs.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience within nonprofit organizations with revenues of $10M+.
  • At least 5 years of senior finance leadership experience.
  • Proven experience building and managing complex organizational budgets.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant funding, audits, compliance, financial reporting, and tax filings.
  • Experience presenting financial data and recommendations to Boards of Directors.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop teams and improve financial operations.
  • Advanced proficiency with Sage Intacct, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting tools.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • CPA and/or advanced degree strongly preferred.
Ideal Background
  • Experience working in grant-funded nonprofit environments.
  • Ability to build budgeting processes from scratch in complex organizations.
  • Experience managing multiple funding sources, contracts, and government funding requirements.
  • Comfortable stepping into environments requiring process improvement and financial cleanup efforts.
  • Hands-on leader capable of balancing strategic oversight with day-to-day operational execution.
