This position is located in the Disarmament and Peace Affairs Branch (DPAB) of the General Assembly and ECOSOC Affairs Division (GAEAD), Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM). DGACM is mandated to facilitate intergovernmental dialogue by delivering conference, parliamentary, protocol, interpretation, and translation services in all six official UN languages across its global duty stations. GAEAD facilitates the deliberation and decision‑making process of intergovernmental and relevant United Nations expert bodies and United Nations conferences by providing substantive and conference management support. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Branch.
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Branch and within delegated authority, the incumbent 1) Assists in planning, coordinating and supervising the organization and provision of secretariat services for sessions and meetings of the General Assembly and its subsidiary organs as well as Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and its subsidiary bodies and United Nations conferences and their preparatory committees, as required, and serves as Secretary/Deputy Secretary of intergovernmental bodies assigned to her/him; 2) Prepares the procedural notes for the presiding officer for each meeting and on each agenda item and handles voting and election procedures; 3) Ensures the timely and accurate submission and issuance of all pre‑session, in‑session, and post‑session documentation (including draft resolutions, decisions and reports); 4) Provides continuous guidance and advice to the presiding officers as well as other elected officers on the organization of work, status of negotiations, conduct of business, rules of procedure and the established practices, programme budget and conference servicing implications and administrative issues while leveraging information and communication technologies for these purposes; 5) Prepares summaries and analytical reports on proceeding of meetings and follows up on the implementation of their decisions and recommendations; 6) Drafts notes, background papers, talking points and other correspondence for senior UN officials and maintain contacts with delegates and staff in other UN offices and departments, and other international organisations; 7) Performs other related duties as required.
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in international relations, law, diplomacy or related field. A first-level university degree in any of these fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, law, diplomacy or related area is required. Experience in the provision of substantive support to intergovernmental processes, and legislative machinery in an international organization such as the United Nations is required. Experience in dealing with procedures, policies and practices of intergovernmental bodies of a major international organization is required. Experience in the provision of advice to leaders of intergovernmental bodies is desirable. Experience in data analytics is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required. French is desirable.
