We are seeking an experienced Insurance Accounting Manager to oversee key accounting and financial reporting functions within a growing insurance organization. This role combines hands‑on technical accounting responsibilities with team leadership and will have significant involvement in statutory reporting, audits, internal controls, and process improvement.
The Accounting Manager will work closely with senior finance leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting. The position will also lead and develop accounting professionals while helping strengthen accounting processes, controls, and reporting capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day accounting activities and provide technical direction to the accounting team.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting professionals, including assigning work, reviewing deliverables, providing feedback, and supporting career development.
- Oversee the monthly and quarterly close process, including journal entries, reconciliations, account analysis, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare and review statutory financial reporting, including quarterly and annual statements, schedules, footnotes, and related regulatory filings.
- Support preparation and review of audited statutory financial statements and coordinate activities with external auditors.
- Ensure accounting and reporting activities comply with GAAP, Statutory Accounting Principles (SAP), and applicable insurance regulations.
- Serve as a key point of contact for internal and external auditors by coordinating information requests, documentation, explanations, and issue resolution.
- Work with regulators, tax professionals, reinsurers, reinsurance intermediaries, and other external parties as required.
- Research and evaluate complex accounting and financial reporting matters and document appropriate accounting conclusions.
- Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, processes, and internal controls.
- Identify opportunities to streamline, automate, and improve accounting and reporting processes.
- Partner with other departments and accounting professionals across different locations and time zones to meet reporting deadlines.
- Manage competing priorities and special projects while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
- Perform additional accounting and financial reporting responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA required.
- 5–7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Previous experience managing or supervising accounting professionals.
- Insurance accounting experience required.
- Strong understanding of statutory accounting and insurance financial reporting; NAIC reporting experience preferred.
- Experience with quarterly and annual statutory statements, financial statement footnotes, and MD&A.
- Experience supporting or coordinating financial statement audits.
- Strong background reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, financial analyses, and accounting schedules.
- Experience researching technical accounting issues and documenting accounting conclusions.
- Public accounting experience preferred.
