Job summary

ZEISS in Missouri is seeking an instrument finishing technician focused on surgical tools, performing trimming, filing, polishing under a microscope to meet exact tolerances.

You will read engineering blueprints, use calipers and micrometers, and work cross-functionally with Quality Control and Production Planning. Training provided; 0-1 year experience acceptable; 2+ years preferred.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • 0-1 year experience in Manufacturing environment.
  • Preferred 2+ years minimum Surgical instrument manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with general manufacturing processes.
  • Assessment of skills will be part of the training process.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written manufacturing procedures.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare instruments under a microscope using filing, bending, and polishing to meet quality and safety standards.
  • Trim coating on forceps tips and remove adhesives to specification.
  • Polish forceps under a microscope, removing marks without damaging insulation.
  • Measure with calipers, micrometer, and gauges to tight tolerances.
  • Read engineering blueprints and drawings for production.
  • Coordinate with Quality Control, Production Planning and Engineering.
  • Keep accurate records of outputs, scrap and inventory.
  • Rework QC rejections as required.
  • Follow 5S and Lean Manufacturing procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

What’s the role?

This role is responsible for preparing and finishing surgical instruments, primarily forceps, to meet strict quality, safety, and functional standards before they are used by customers. The work is hands‑on and highly detail-oriented, with a significant amount of time spent working under a microscope. The employee uses advanced metalworking techniques such as filing, bending, trimming, and polishing to achieve the required specifications and tolerances.

Here’s what you’ll do:
  • Perform preliminary steps on surgical instruments to prepare for finishing, working under a microscope and using trade skills such as filing, bending, polishing, and other advanced metalworking techniques to consistently meet or exceed the established quality standards for form, fit, and function to meet safety standards for use with our customers
  • Trim back coating on forceps tips to specifications, and remove adhesives underneath using blades and files
  • Polish forceps under a microscope to remove machine and file marks using various polishing wheels under a microscope, without damaging the insulative coating
  • Accurate use of measurement tools, including calipers, micrometer, and various gauges, to accurately adhere to tolerances as low as +/-.010"
  • Comprehend and implement production from engineering level blueprints and technical drawings
  • Cross communicates with areas including Quality Control, Production Planning, and Engineering
  • Maintain accurate record-keeping of outputs, scrap, and inventory
  • Rework rejections from Quality Control area
  • Preserve workflow pattern by following established 5S and Lean Manufacturing procedures
  • Other duties as assigned by management
