Job summary

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s LCLS Operations seeks a Science and Engineering Associate to lead and support scientific instruments and experiments. You will coordinate among scientists, technicians, and engineers, oversee installation, maintenance, and upgrades, and ensure proper documentation and safety practices across disciplines.

The role requires a BA/BS in engineering or related field or equivalent experience, with strong data analysis and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or five years of equivalent work experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
• Experience applying complex scientific and engineering principles and practices to perform technical services.
• Experience with data analysis, experimental process, and development of prototypes/equipment.
• Ability to write clear documentation and perform administrative duties.
• Experience overseeing a laboratory space and supervising technicians.
• Ability to communicate and liaise with staff, students, faculty and external vendors.
• Ability to supervise and train a diverse work staff.

Responsibilities

• Participate in technical research utilizing and/or developing experimental equipment, devices, specimens, plans, designs, reports, and data analysis.
• Leadership responsibilities overseeing technicians and/or support staff in daily work.
• Liaise between researchers, students, technical staff, scientists, vendors, and other university staff; provide training and guidance.
• Support scientific and research programs; analyze requirements, monitor experimental process, and design prototypes/equipment.
• Manage, repair, and troubleshoot complex equipment and experimental systems.
• Prepare and review drawings, material lists, requisitions, and other development documents.
• Coordinate and work on scientific/engineering installations; oversee equipment operations and maintenance.
• Acquire and maintain tools, equipment, and chemicals; maintain documentation of research
• Oversee work of technicians and staff; provide guidance to technicians and operators.
