Job summary

Nesco Resource is partnering with a global engineering and technology organization to place an Instrumentation Engineer in its Houston team. The role focuses on hands-on instrumentation engineering for large-scale industrial projects, from design through startup.

The ideal candidate has strong field instrumentation knowledge, experience with instrument installation, and the ability to collaborate across multiple engineering disciplines. Travel around 20–30% is expected.

Qualifications

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related electrical discipline.
• 3+ years of instrumentation engineering experience in chemical, petrochemical, refining, energy, or EPC environments.
• Hands-on experience with field instrumentation design, specification, and installation.
• Experience with control valve sizing and specification.
• Familiarity with ISA/IEC/NFPA/API standards preferred.

• Develop instrumentation deliverables: instrument indexes, I/O lists, datasheets, loop diagrams, hook-up drawings, cable schedules, and installation layouts.
• Specify and select field instrumentation for pressure, temperature, flow, and level.
• Size and specify control valves and other instrumentation equipment.
• Prepare instrument specifications, BOMs, and bid evaluations.
• Review vendor drawings and documentation; support FATs, SATs, and field installation.

Job description

Nesco Resource is partnering with a global engineering and technology organization seeking an Instrumentation Engineer to join its Houston engineering team.

This position will support large-scale industrial process and capital projects from engineering and design through procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in instrumentation engineering, field instrumentation, and instrument installation. This is not a programming-focused controls/automation position. We are looking for someone who enjoys the hands‑on technical side of instrumentation engineering and wants to continue growing within that specialty.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop instrumentation engineering deliverables including instrument indexes, I/O lists, datasheets, loop diagrams, hook‑up drawings, cable schedules, and installation layouts
• Specify and select field instrumentation for pressure, temperature, flow, and level
• Size and specify control valves and other instrumentation equipment
• Develop instrument specifications, technical documentation, material requisitions, and bid evaluations
• Review vendor drawings and technical documentation
• Provide instrumentation input to P&IDs and project design documentation
• Support instrument layouts, cable engineering, BOM estimates, and installation requirements
• Coordinate with process, electrical, mechanical, piping, and controls/automation engineering teams
• Participate in design and 3D model reviews for accessibility and constructability
• Interface with clients, vendors, contractors, and project teams
• Support FATs, SATs, loop checks, field installation, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting
• Support projects throughout engineering, procurement, construction, and field execution

Qualifications

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering or related electrical discipline required
• 3+ years of instrumentation engineering experience within chemical, petrochemical, refining, energy, industrial process, EPC, or similar environments
• Strong hands‑on experience with field instrumentation design and specification
• Experience with control valve sizing and specification
• Experience developing instrumentation engineering deliverables in a project environment
• EIT/FE certification with a commitment to pursue PE licensure preferred
• Familiarity with DCS, PLC, SCADA, and/or Safety Instrumented Systems is beneficial; however, this position is not centered around PLC programming or controls programming
• Knowledge of applicable ISA, IEC, NEC, NFPA, and/or API standards is preferred
• Experience with engineering software such as COMOS, SmartPlant, or AutoCAD is a plus but not required
• Must be comfortable traveling approximately 20–30% domestically and internationally
