We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Instrument Maintenance Technician to support the reliability and performance of our precision laboratory instruments. JOB SUMMARY

The Instrument Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining the operational integrity and reliability of laboratory equipment through scheduled preventive maintenance, precise instrument calibration, and performance verification. Working closely with laboratory staff and quality personnel, this technician ensures that all equipment used in standardized physical and chemical testing remains in full compliance with ISO 17025 and internal quality system requirements.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Execute daily, weekly, monthly, and annual preventive maintenance tasks on laboratory instruments, including viscometers, flash point testers, oxidation stability instruments, and other specialized petroleum testing equipment.
  • Develop and maintain equipment maintenance schedules and ensure adherence to timelines and specifications.
  • Maintain detailed PM records including work performed, parts used, and any anomalies or deviations.
  • Perform routine and scheduled calibrations using certified reference materials (CRMs), master instruments, or calibration standards traceable to NIST or other recognized bodies.
  • Conduct performance checks and verification procedures post-calibration to confirm instrument accuracy and repeatability.
  • Record calibration data and maintain calibration certificates and logs according to ISO 17025 documentation standards.
  • Diagnose and resolve minor equipment malfunctions or errors; escalate major failures to vendors or senior technical staff.
  • Work with manufacturers' support teams and field service technicians to coordinate repairs, installations, or complex calibrations.
  • Replace worn or defective components such as sensors, fuses, tubing, or filters as part of the maintenance process.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, and complete records of all maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and service activities.
  • Support internal and external audits by ensuring documentation is audit-ready and aligned with ISO 17025, safety, and quality standards.
  • Update, revise and create maintenance and calibration SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) as directed.
  • Assist in commissioning new laboratory instruments including unpacking, inspection, installation, and initial verification.
  • Participate in equipment qualification to ensure ISO17025compliance, if applicable.
  • Monitor instrument usage and performance trends to recommend replacements or upgrades.
  • Ensure all maintenance and calibration activities are conducted in accordance with laboratory safety protocols and chemical hygiene plans.
  • Participate in safety meetings and contribute to maintaining a culture of safety in the lab.
  • Keep maintenance areas clean, organized, and free from hazards.

ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES

  • Track and manage commonly used spare parts (e.g., fuses, seals, sensors) to ensure availability for maintenance and reduce equipment downtime.
  • Support investigations into equipment failures or recurring issues by providing maintenance logs, observations, and participating in problem-solving efforts.
  • Coordinate the shipment and tracking of instruments or reference standards that require off-site calibration or certification by accredited vendors.
  • Provide informal training or guidance to lab personnel on proper equipment handling, basic troubleshooting, and cleaning practices.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline maintenance schedules, improve calibration accuracy, or enhance instrument reliability through documented suggestions and collaboration.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS: Associate degree in engineering, technical or related degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum offive years’ experience in laboratory, manufacturing or technical setting preferred.

  • Proficient in practical laboratory techniques and procedures.

Must be able to move/lift equipment weighing up to 50lbs. Other physical efforts may include but not limited to carrying weight, lifting, seeing, hearing, talking, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, climbing, stooping, crawling, kneeling, pushing, pulling, repetitive motion/dexterity, and other physical requirements as required by the position.

SAFETY MEASURES

All employees are expected to follow safety procedures and regulations at all times.

HOURS OF WORK

Full-time hourly position, a standard 40 hours per week is required. Work schedule may vary based on department and scheduling. Overtime may be required based on business needs.

TRAVEL

Position may require up to 5% travel. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.
