Responsibilities

  • Installs, tests, calibrates and troubleshoots control systems and devices including analog/digital, meters, VFDs and sensors.
  • Rebuilds, modifies and repairs control devices and components such as dampers, relays, panels, sensors and transmitters.
  • Tests HVAC and energy-using equipment (boilers, chillers, lighting) and recommends repairs or replacements.
  • Measures and documents HVAC specs and performance values (CFM, velocity, static pressure, voltage, wattage, amperage, ohms, power, PF).
  • Tests, calibrates and installs meters, sensors and other devices for HVAC equipment, boilers and chillers; develops control strategies.
  • Identifies and evaluates systems for energy efficiency improvements; tests energy-conserving products.
  • Develops application programming for Energy Management and Direct Digital Control systems.
  • Engages and alters control software and uses CAD to document/re-design control systems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Description

Instrument & Control Mechanic

Job Summary:
To read, understand and interpret blueprints, drawings, floor plans, schedules and manufacturer's operating and/or maintenance specifications as they relate to electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and special equipment, building structures and finishes. To maintain and perform tests, calibrations, evaluation repairs, modifications, replacements and installations on HVAC, chiller and boiler control systems and devices to include pneumatic, electrical, electronic and direct digital control systems. To respond to requests from architects, engineers, energy managers, building occupants and others regarding testing, evaluating, calibrating and documenting mechanical and electrical controls and metering systems.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. 1. Installs, tests, calibrates and troubleshoots existing and new control systems, including
    analog and digital, metering devices, variable frequency and variable speed drive
    controllers, turbine and vortex flow meters, differential RTD and TC transmitters, and other
    devices. Uses testing and calibration instrumentation and equipment to evaluate system
    performance and diagnose problems. Evaluates test data and recommends needed repairs,
    modifications and replacements.
  2. 2. Rebuilds, modifies and repairs control devices and components including valve dampers,
    receiver-controllers, relays, control panels, sensors, transmitters, thermostats, meters and
    other similar components and devices.
  3. 3. Tests and analyzes the operation of HVAC and major energy-using equipment and systems
    such as boilers, chillers, lighting systems, etc., and determines operating conditions and
    efficiencies. Makes recommendations for system repairs, renovations, modifications,
    retrofits or replacements.
  4. 4. Analyzes and documents the design, application and condition of existing HVAC and
    control systems. Measures and records HVAC system specifications and performance
    values such as air flow (CFM), air velocity (FPM), static pressure (inches of water), voltage,
    wattage, amperage, ohms, power (KVA, KWA) and power factors.
  5. 5. Tests, calibrates and installs electric watt-hour meters, steam and water flow meters,
    temperature, pressure, and humidity sensors and other similar measuring devices for HVAC
    equipment, boilers and chillers. Develops and analyzes control strategies for the
    replacement or modification of existing control systems, and the design of new control
    systems.
  6. 6. Identifies and evaluates systems and components which are candidates for improving the
    energy efficiency of controlled processes. Tests and evaluates new and different types of
    control and energy conserving products for installation within UAB facilities.
  7. 7. Develops application programming to be entered into existing Energy Management
    Systems, Direct Digital control systems, and other microprocessor based control systems
    and software programs.
  8. 8. Engages and alters existing controls software programs through the use of proprietary
    languages. Enters new programs into control system processors and memories. Uses
    computer aided design and drafting (CADD) graphic software programs to design new and
    document existing control systems using micro-computer hardware.
  9. 9. Performs other duties as assigned.


Hourly Pay Range: $22.90 - $29.80

Qualifications

Graduate from an approved accredited post-secondary two (2) year vocational or technical school in Electronic, Electrical, or HVAC, and four (4) years experience in building automation, electronic or industrial controls required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement. A driver's license valid in the state of Alabama may be required based on departmental need.
