Job summary

The Chinese-American Planning Council is seeking an instructor for the NDA After-School Program in New York City. PROGRAM SUMMARY

CPC Education and Career Services (ECS) provides dynamic programs and activities that bridge youth and adults with their highest educational, economic, and leadership potential. ECS believes it is never too early or too late to start learning, which is why we use an asset-based approach to maximize clients’ current strengths. Whether in our schools, community centers, or internship sites, ECS creates equitable learning environments that promote leadership development, self-advocacy, and community building. Our programs equip clients with essential skills and experiences today so that they are empowered to take the next step tomorrow.

NDA After-School Program offers youth participants a wide range of enrichment of workshops to promote lifelong skills needed to succeed academically, socially, and professionally. These workshops include but not limited to academic tutoring, college and work readiness, leadership development, guest speaker series, mentoring opportunities and recreational activities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Instructor will:

  • Provide high school students an individualize and/or in a small group setting homework help assistance and tutoring in the following subject matter (Preferably in STEM)
  • Mathematics (e.g. Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus)
  • Science (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, and Physics)
  • Other subjects as needed
  • Develop and facilitate informative and interactive workshops to related positive, holistic youth development
  • Coordinate the scheduling of guest speakers, community services opportunities and field trips (e.g., college visits, recreational activities) within program guidelines.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Program Director
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School degree required; College student preferred
  • Prior experience in academic tutoring, especially with high school youth population
  • Must have the necessary content knowledge, experience, and skills to implement the program activities effectively, including executing lesson plans and leading structured educational, recreational, and cultural activities for youth.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong work ethic and demonstrated passion for youth development, especially working with low income and immigrant population.
  • Strong social and emotional maturity and behavioral management skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in Arabic and Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese) or Spanish is a plus.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS OVERVIEW
  • $17.00 - $20.00 per hour; 10 hours per week
  • CPC offers eligible part-time staff members mandatory benefits, including paid New York State sick time
