Job summary

CPC is seeking a Peer Tutor at International High School at Lafayette in Brooklyn to provide homework help and tutoring to high school students in Mathematics, Science, English, and History.

The role requires current high school student with a GPA of 3.3+ and prior tutoring experience. Fluency in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese) or Spanish is preferred. 10–15 hours per week with some evenings and weekends, at $17.00–$18.50 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Current student in participating high school with a minimum 3.3 (87+) cumulative GPA.
  • Prior tutoring experience, especially with the high school youth population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high school students individualized or small group homework help and tutoring in Math, Science, English Language Arts, and History.
  • Support Group Leaders and the Education Specialist in evaluating program activities and events.
  • Provide academic guidance and mentorship to fellow students navigating high school and adulthood.
  • Assist with CPC programming administration through data entry, compiling, filing, and organizing participant folders.
  • Adhere to program policies, procedures, and regulations by DOHMH, DYCD, and CPC.
  • Report to and fulfill other related duties as assigned by the Program Director.

Program Description

CPC Education and Career Services (ECS) provides dynamic programs and activities that bridge youth and adults with their highest educational, economic and leadership potential. ECS believes it is never too early or too late to start learning, which is why we use an asset-based approach to maximize clients’ current strengths. Whether in our schools, community centers, or internship sites, ECS creates equitable learning environments that promote leadership development, self-advocacy, and community building. Our programs equip clients with essential skills and experiences today so that they are empowered to take the next step tomorrow.

School Violence Prevention Program: NYSED SVP program provides students with a safe, supportive environment focused on preventing violence and promoting positive decision‑making. Through mentoring, conflict‑resolution workshops, social‑emotional learning, leadership activities, academic support, and recreational enrichment, students develop communication, problem‑solving, and teamwork skills. The program empowers youth to manage conflicts peacefully, build positive relationships, and contribute to a safe and supportive school community.

Essential Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Peer Tutor will:

  • Provide High School students an individualized and/or small group setting homework help assistance, and tutoring in the following subject matter:
    • Mathematics (e.g., Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus)
    • Science (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
    • English Language Art
    • History
  • Support Group Leaders and the Education Specialist in evaluating the effectiveness of program activities and events.
  • Provide academic guidance and mentorship to fellow students as they navigate high school and into adulthood.
  • Assist with the administrative aspects of the CPC programming through data entry, compiling, filing, and organizing participant folders.
  • Adhere to all program policies, procedures, and regulations established by DOHMH, DYCD, and CPC.
  • Report to and fulfill other related duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Education and Experience
  • Current student in participating high school with a minimum 3.3 (87+) cumulative GPA
  • Prior tutoring experience, especially with the high school youth population

  • Strong social and emotional maturity and behavioral management skills.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese) or Spanish preferred.
Compensation & Benefits Overview
  • $17.00 - $18.50 per hour; 10-15 hours per week with occasional evenings and weekends
  • CPC offers eligible part-time staff members mandatory benefits, including paid New York State sick time.
