Job summary

The English Instructor is responsible for deliveringhigh-quality instruction in composition, literature, and writtencommunication skills. This role focuses on building students'competence in critical reading, analytical writing, and effectivewritten expression across academic and professional contexts. TheInstructor collaborates with the Liberal Arts department chair andcolleagues to design engaging course content, assess studentlearning outcomes, and integrate instructional technology such asCanvas into classroom delivery..

Key Responsibilities
  • Teaching
  • Provide learning experiences in accordance with students' needsand abilities
  • Create a learning environment in which all students are treatedequitably
  • Make adequate preparation for the instructional process toensure that course content is presented in a manner suitable forstudents with varying learning styles
  • Direct students not on the official class roster to the Officeof Enrollment Management to correct enrollment problems,restricting attendance to officially enrolled students
  • Meet all scheduled classes within the appropriate timeframe andprovide opportunities for student conferences either online, byphone, or through face-to-face interactions
  • Be punctual with respect to class meetings and provideinstruction for the entire class period
  • Notify academic program manager/department chair of absencesand promptly provide course continuity plans
  • Utilize Canvas or other learning management systems asappropriate and required
  • Use instructional and technological resources such as thelibrary, Digital Learning and Academic Support Center (DLASC), andcomputer technology as appropriate
  • Provide classroom instruction in accordance with the Americanswith Disabilities Act of 1990 and federal harassment policies
  • Alert the department chair or academic program manager of anyinstances of academic dishonesty
  • Maintain a minimum of 10 office hours per week
  • Maintain accurate grade and attendance records
  • Assess learning outcomes and utilize results when planning andpreparing future courses
  • Administer final examinations for students during the scheduledexam period
  • Participate in assigning course credit via prior learningassessment
  • Participate in the teaching evaluation process.
  • Student Support and Advising
    • Discuss with counselors and other appropriate personnel anystudent problems which may require special attention
    • Advise students and perform special assigned duties related tothe registration and retention of students
  • Curriculum Development
    • Develop, assess, and revise curricula in accordance with thepolicies and procedures upheld by the Faculty Senate Courses andCurricula committee
  • Professional Development
    • Engage in approved professional development activities relatedto pedagogy, assessment, and academic area of expertise to
    • enhance one's effectiveness in all aspects of teaching andcourse management
  • College Service
    • Participate in recruitment, advising, and registrationevents
    • Serve on college-wide committees and actively participate incommittee activities throughout the term of service
  • Administrative and Other Responsibilities
    • Adhere to professional standards of conduct
    • Promote the College's image in the community
    • Promote an atmosphere of collegiality within one's departmentand division
    • Submit syllabi, office hours, grades, attendance, electronictime sheets, and other reports by established deadlines
    • Attend all departmental, division, and general facultymeetings
    • Collaborate with departmental and college-wide colleagues inthe selection of library resources, software, textbooks, andclassroom equipment
    • Attend college convocations and participate in commencementexercises (attired in appropriate academic regalia)
    • Participate in the annual faculty performance evaluationprocess
    • Participate in other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Master’s degree in Master’s degree in English, linguistics, orliterature or Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in creative writing, ormaster’s degree in any discipline with 18 graduate semester hoursin English, linguistics, literature, or creative writing.
Experience
  • Must possess college level teaching experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to teach a range of English courses (e.g., composition,literature, co-requisite/developmental English) to students withvarying skill
  • levels and learning styles
  • Ability to evaluate and provide constructive feedback onstudent writing and reading comprehension
  • Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) andinstructional technology
  • Strong interpersonal and classroom management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, staff, andadministration
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to managemultiple courses, deadlines, and reporting requirements
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to assess student learning outcomes and adjustinstructional strategies accordingly
  • Commitment to student success and equitable, inclusiveclassroom practices
  • Ability to support students at varying levels of collegereadiness, including those enrolled in co-requisite and dualenrollment coursework
