Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College areresponsible for supporting student success by creating an optimumlearning environment, responding to student needs, managingeffective instructional activities, modeling employability skills,demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative workrelationships with other faculty and staff, supporting collegeadministrative requirements, and maintaining competency in theirinstructional field. He/she will be responsible for qualityinstruction and for effective participation and interest in thetotal affairs of the college. Under general supervision, thisindividual is limited to teach only clinical and dental sciencelaboratory courses in the dental hygiene curriculum. TheCollege and the accrediting body, CODA, requires all didacticinstruction to be taught by an instructor with a bachelor’s degreeor higher.
Duties/Functions
Teaching
Teaching is limited to clinic and dental science laboratory coursesonly, unless instructor has an earned bachelor’s degree from anaccredited institution.
Professional Development
Maintain a professional status that supports the instructionalmission by:
- participating in professional development activities tomaintain currency in field; maintaining current credentials orlicensures as required by program or accreditation
- participating in professional development opportunities toadvance teaching skills and strategies
Administration
Provide daily & ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment andstudent records to include:
- maintaining clinic and laboratory spaces including upkeep ofassigned equipment
- providing for the security of facilities, equipment andinstructional materials and maintaining safe working conditions,maintaining student records (e.g., grades and attendance) inaccordance with established deadlines using a variety oftechnology-based programs (e.g., Colleague, WebAdvisor,Canvas)
- complying with all applicable college, state and federal rulesand regulations
Student Support
Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:
- addressing student concerns in a timely manner
- promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success
- referring students to campus and community resources whenappropriate
- Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills:adaptability, communication, information processing, problemsolving, responsibility and teamwork.

Education Required
- Graduate of an accredited dental hygiene program.
- Associate’s degree in Dental Hygiene or a closely relatedfield, from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- Current unrestricted license to practice as a dental hygienistin North Carolina or be eligible for licensure in NorthCarolina.
Education Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondaryinstitution.
- American Dental Hygienists Association ( ADHA )membership.
Experience Required
- Three years or the equivalent of full-time clinical experienceas a registered dental hygienist.
Experience Preferred
- Teaching and/or industry training experience in dental topicsin any of the following formats: teaching courses, trainingsessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/orother continuing education seminars.
- Greater than three years or the equivalent of full-timeclinical experience as a dental hygienist.
- Post-secondary teaching experience.
- Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Experience with distance learning and/or alternateinstructional delivery systems.
KSA Required
The instructor shall possess an understanding of and commitment tothe nature and role of the Community College, particularly its“open door” policy. He/she shall have demonstrated personal andprofessional competence for the responsibilities assigned. Theinstructor must be able to:

- Reporting Requirements

- eLearning Level One in Canvas before the first day of the firstsemester teaching
- eLearning Level Two in Canvas for instructors who teach onlineor hybrid delivery methods before the first day of the firstsemester teaching in that format
Departmental Trainings/Requirements
- Bloodborne pathogens/personal protective equipment training(yearly)
- Automatic electronic defibrillator/ CPR certification (renewalevery 2 years)
- Health requirements as specified by clinical agencycontracts
- Background check consisting of Criminal Background Check ( CBC), Office of Inspector General Reviews ( OIG ), and twelve panelurine drug screens from the facility selected by GTCC (ifapplicable)
