Job summary

Drexel University’s Eye Institute (TEI) is seeking a clinical faculty member to educate optometry students and residents while delivering patient care across TEI and satellite facilities. You will teach preclinical and clinical skills within the didactic and clinical curriculum, contributing to assessments and program development.

The role emphasizes supervision of residents, participation in rounds and scholarly activity, and alignment with TEI credentialing and Drexel policies.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited school.
  • 1 year residency or 4+ years clinical experience required.
  • Current PA license to practice optometry (therapeutic/glaucoma) or license-eligible.
  • Residency program or 5+ years equivalent clinical practice completed.
  • Eligible for TEI/PCO faculty rank and appointment.
  • Continued faculty appointment contingent on credentialing and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical education to optometry students, residents and staff.
  • Instruct didactic, lab, small group sessions and assessments.
  • Offer feedback during patient care and through Meditrek logs.
  • Assist in remediating struggling students as needed.
  • Participate in clinical rounds, mentoring and evaluations.
  • Contribute to curricular planning and clinical protocol development.
  • Attend faculty meetings and engage in scholarly activity.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and TEI policy compliance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Provides clinical education/patient care within The Eye Institute (TEI) of Drexel University, including the flagship facility as well as the satellite clinical facilities. Within the didactic curriculum, provides instruction in preclinical skills and/or other laboratory/lecture roles as related to background, interests, and needs of the program.

Essential Functions

  • Provides clinical education to optometry students, residents and other personnel as assigned to the primary care (and specialty care services as appropriate) at TEI or its satellite facilities.
  • Provides instruction in didactic, laboratory, small group education, and assessments to optometry students, based on the needs of the program.
  • Provides feedback to students verbally during patient care, through daily patient encounter Meditrek log entries, to the chief of service for midterm and final evaluations, and attending grading meetings when appropriate.
  • Assists the service chief in remediating struggling students as needed.
  • Participates in clinical round tables before, during, or after clinical sessions.
  • Participates in the education, mentoring, and evaluations of primary care and specialty care residents when appropriate.
  • Participates with program directors and other faculty/staff in the planning, preparation, and implementation of integrated curricular content and clinical protocols based on the needs of the program.
  • Participates in faculty meetings and engages in scholarly activity and provides service to the University, College, and profession.
  • Participates in the Scholars Program as assigned.
  • Responsible for accurate, timely medical record and Meditrek completion as well as compliance with the policies and procedures of the TEI Practice Manual and Drexel University.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

This clinical faculty appointment allows faculty to participate in the faculty promotion process, consistent with the current non-tenure track expectations.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of Doctor of Optometry
  • Minimum of 1 year of residency or 4 years experience
  • Graduation from an accredited school or college of optometry
  • Current Pennsylvania license to practice optometry (with therapeutic and glaucoma privileges), or license-eligible
  • Completion of a one-year or longer residency program in optometry, or a minimum of five years equivalent experience in clinical practice
  • Eligible for faculty rank and professional staff appointment at TEI and PCO
  • Continuing faculty appointment is contingent on maintaining clinical privileges consistent with TEI credentialing policies and protocols and adhering to established compliance protocols

Preferred Qualifications

  • Residency
  • Prior supervisory experience in an optometric setting or at The Eye Institute
  • Experience as an optometric educator
  • Strong clinically- and educationally-related technology skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in optometric education and patient care
  • Demonstrated history of a positive work ethic
  • FAAO - Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry
