Position Summary

The Instructional Technologist - Maker Hub position is a part of the Creative Learning Technologies Team within Teaching and Learning Technologies.â¯This position supports the operations and instructional work of Elon University's Maker Hubs. The role balances makerspace operations, including facilities, equipment, and the supervision and development of student staff, with instructional responsibilities that advance the integration of making into teaching and learning through courses, projects, and programs. The position collaborates with faculty, staff, and students while maintaining a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment that supports creative and hands-on work.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Masterâs degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Media, Instructional Technology, Instructional Design, Education, Engineering, Industrial Design, Architecture, Product Design, Studio Art, Graphic Design or a related field. Minimum of 1-2 years of relevant professional experience in instructional technology, curriculum and instruction, educational media, makerspace operations, digital fabrication, or a related field.

Bachelorâs degree with 5+ years of relevant professional experience in instructional technology, curriculum and instruction, educational media, makerspace operations, digital fabrication, or a related field.
Experience working with a range of makerspace tools or digital fabrication technologies is required.

Preferred Education and Experience

Preferred experience includes overseeing or supporting a makerspace, fabrication lab, innovation space, or similar creative learning environment; supervising and mentoring a team of student staff; and supporting maker-centered learning initiatives in an education environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge of makerspace tools, including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC equipment, vinyl cutters, electronics tools, sewing and embroidery machines, and woodworking tools, with the ability to learn new technologies, support their operation and maintenance, and teach their safe use to users with varying levels of experience.
Knowledge of makerspace safety practices and digital fabrication workflows that support safe and effective use of makerspace technologies.
Ability to supervise, train, and support student staff while fostering skill development, accountability, leadership growth, and a high-quality user experience.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and consultative skills with the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students at all levels. Patient, approachable, and committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Ability to support the integration of maker activities into teaching and learning by helping faculty, staff, and students apply maker tools and concepts to course activities, assignments, projects, and other learning experiences.
Experience designing and leading training sessions, facilitating workshops, teaching class sessions, and presenting to groups.
Highly organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, adapt to frequent interruptions, and balance operational, instructional, and student supervision priorities. Able to work both independently and collaboratively.
Proficiency with Windows and/or Macintosh computers and Microsoft Office 365. Familiarity with Learning Management Systems, such as Canvas, Adobe Illustrator, and 3D design software is preferred.

Job Duties

  • Makerspace Operations, Access, and Communications Oversee the day-to-day functions of Elon Universityâs campus makerspaces across two locations, ensuring that facilities, equipment, supplies, maintenance, policies, and safety procedures support a safe and accessible environment for making and learning. Support makerspace operations by purchasing equipment, supplies, and services, tracking expenditures, and assisting with budget-related planning and purchasing activities. Maintain Maker Hub training systems, including online training modules, trained-user records, and equipment authorizations. Ensure training requirements remain current and aligned with policies and safety procedures to support safe, effective use of Maker Hub resources. Support Maker Hub communications in collaboration with student leaders, including regular email newsletters, social media content, website updates, physical signage, and other promotional materials. Share faculty, student, and staff stories that highlight the impact of making, maker pedagogies, creative learning, and hands-on work across campus.
  • Student Staff Supervision and Development Supervise, mentor, and support the Maker Hubâs student staff. Implement the ElonGROW (Guided Reflection on Work) model by facilitating regular guided reflection conversations that connect workplace learning with studentsâ broader educational and career goals. Meet regularly with student team leads and staff to set expectations, provide guidance, support problem-solving, and prepare student employees to deliver safe, welcoming, and high-quality Maker Hub services. Coach student leaders in coordinating staffing responsibilities and day-to-day operations, helping them develop leadership, supervisory, and decision-making skills through meaningful work experiences in the Maker Hub.
  • Maker Education and Campus Partnerships Promote and support the integration of the Maker Hub into teaching and learning by consulting with faculty to develop maker activities, assignments, and projects that align with course objectives. Teach maker tools, safety practices and foundational maker concepts through class sessions, workshops, consultations, and instructional resources. Design, develop, and create instructional and training materials that support safe and effective use of Maker Hub tools and technologies, including training modules, tool guides, safety resources, and learning activities in Moodle and/or Canvas. Coordinate group orientations for classes, organizations, and campus groups to introduce users to Maker Hub resources and policies. Build partnerships across campus to expand access to maker-related resources and strengthen collaboration among Elon programs, departments, and spaces with shared interests in making, creativity, experiential learning, and applied technology.
