Newton Public Schools is seeking an Instructional Support Staff member to provide flexible classroom and student support across multiple grade levels. This full-time role focuses on maintaining safe learning environments and covering staff absences to support daily operations.

The ISS team may work in general education, inclusion settings, or other instructional environments, adapting to school needs and student requirements. Massachusetts licensure eligibility is preferred.

FLSA Status (Exempt/Non-exempt): Non-Exempt, Unit D

Reports To: School Principal

Schedule: Full Time - 5 days weekly

SUMMARY

The Instructional Support Staff (ISS) member is a school-based instructional support professional who provides flexible classroom, instructional, and student support across multiple grade levels and programs. ISS staff help ensure continuity of instruction, maintain safe learning environments, and provide coverage for staff absences while supporting the school's daily operational needs.

ISS staff are expected to be adaptable and may be assigned to general education classrooms, specialized programs, inclusion settings, or other instructional environments based on student and school needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma required (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred)
• Ability to work effectively with children and adolescents
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Massachusetts educator license or eligibility preferred
• Previous experience working in schools or educational settings preferred
• Experience supporting students with disabilities and/or behavioral needs preferred
• Training in de-escalation, trauma-informed practices, or behavior support preferred

JOB FUNCTIONS

• Be familiar with fire exits, fire drill procedures, and safety procedures
• Assist with lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other student supervision responsibilities as assigned.
• Review notes for the day, take attendance and follow the lesson plans of the teacher
• Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism in accepting changing assignments.
• Maintain confidentiality as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to operate computer, printer, telephone, copier, facsimile machine, and all other standard office equipment
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
• Sufficient mobility to navigate within a large or small school building
• Regularly required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds
