Job summary

Newton Public Schools - District Wide is seeking an instructional support staff member for middle school to provide flexible classroom, instructional, and student support across multiple grade levels. This part-time role may be assigned 1 day or 3 days weekly and includes substitute coverage for teachers and staff as needed.

As an ISS, you will help maintain a safe learning environment, support students with diverse needs, and assist with daily operational tasks while adapting to changing

Qualifications

• High School Diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide substitute classroom coverage for teachers and staff as assigned.
• Foster a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment.
• Assist students with academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and functional needs.
• Create a safe and supervised classroom environment conducive to learning.
• Be familiar with fire exits, drill procedures, and safety procedures.
• Assist with lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and other supervision responsibilities as assigned.
• Review notes for the day, take attendance and follow lesson plans.
• Demonstrate flexibility and professionalism in accepting changing assignments.
• Maintain confidentiality as defined by FERPA.

SUMMARY

The Instructional Support Staff (ISS) member is a school-based instructional support professional who provides flexible classroom, instructional, and student support across multiple grade levels and programs. ISS staff help ensure continuity of instruction, maintain safe learning environments, and provide coverage for staff absences while supporting the school's daily operational needs.

ISS staff are expected to be adaptable and may be assigned to general education classrooms, specialized programs, inclusion settings, or other instructional environments based on student and school needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High School Diploma required (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred)
• Ability to work effectively with children and adolescents
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Massachusetts educator license or eligibility preferred
• Previous experience working in schools or educational settings preferred
• Experience supporting students with disabilities and/or behavioral needs preferred
• Training in de-escalation, trauma-informed practices, or behavior support preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to operate computer, printer, telephone, copier, facsimile machine, and all other standard office equipment
• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
• Sufficient mobility to navigate within a large or small school building
• Regularly required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds
