The Center for Behavior andSystems Innovation (CBSI), building upon the nationally recognizedHANDS in Autism model established in 2004, advancesimplementation of evidence-based practices through training,consultation, systems innovation, resource development, andcommunity-engaged research. The Center builds "local capacity" bypartnering with autistic individuals, families, educators,healthcare providers, employers, community organizations, and stateagencies to improve outcomes across educational, healthcare,employment, justice, and community settings. Guided by thephilosophy that evidence-based practices are "Essential for autism,beneficial for all," CBSI develops practical tools, professionallearning opportunities, implementation supports, and resources thatstrengthen systems serving individuals with autism spectrumdisorder (ASD), neurodevelopmental disabilities, behavioral healthneeds, and broader communities. Through interdisciplinarycollaboration, implementation science, and responsive partnerships,the Center remains agile in addressing emerging community,statewide, national, and international needs while advancingIndiana University's (IU) missions of teaching, research, andservice.
Job Summary
The Instructional Designer will serve across both the Center forBehavior and Systems Innovation (CBSI) and the Indiana ResourceCenter for Autism (IRCA), supporting the development of innovative,accessible, and evidence-based educational resources that improveimplementation of best practices across educational, healthcare,and community settings. Working collaboratively with subject matterexperts, researchers, and implementation specialists, theInstructional Designer revises, adapts and develops engaginglearning experiences, multimedia resources, and professionaldevelopment programs for educators, families, individuals,clinicians, and other professionals.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Contributes to statewide, national, and externally fundedinitiatives by applying adult learning principles, instructionaldesign methodologies, accessibility standards, and educationaltechnologies to expand the impact of the HANDS in Autism model aspart of CBSI and IRCA's long-standing leadership in autismeducation and support both as it pertains to autism but within abroader ecosystem of behavioral health, disabilities andsystems.
- Designs, develops, implements, and continuously improvesengaging instructional materials for online, hybrid, andface-to-face learning experiences.
- Collaborates with subject matter experts from CBSI, HANDS inAutism, and Indiana Resource Center for Autism (IRCA) to translateevidence-based practices into learner-centered educationalproducts.
- Creates multimedia instructional content, including interactivee-learning modules, videos, job aids, facilitator guides,participant workbooks, and digital resources.
- Ensures instructional materials align with adult learningprinciples, Universal Design for Learning, accessibility standards,and evidence-based instructional practices.
- Maintains instructional consistency, branding, and qualityacross Center educational materials.
- Supports learning management systems and online course deliveryplatforms.
- Collaborates with Center team members to review, catalog,organize, maintain, and continuously update instructionalmaterials, training resources, implementation tools, and multimediaassets across the Center for Behavior and Systems Innovation andthe Indiana Resource Center for Autism; develops and supports anefficient registry and monitoring system that ensures materialsremain current, accessible, appropriately formatted,version-controlled, and readily available for training, technicalassistance, dissemination, and project needs.
- Supports development and delivery of statewide, national, andinternational professional learning initiatives.
- Assists with curriculum planning, instructional sequencing, andlearner engagement strategies for workshops, institutes, webinars,and certificate programs.
- Develops evaluation tools and analyzes learner feedback toinform continuous improvement.
- Supports onboarding and instructional materials for trainers,facilitators, and partner organizations.
- Designs and updates evidence-based implementation resources,toolkits, visual supports, guides, and downloadable materials.
- Collaborates on development of publicly accessible educationalresources for educators, families, providers, and communityorganizations.
- Assists with website content updates and digital resourceorganization.
- Contributes to newsletters, online communities, social media,and dissemination efforts supporting statewide and nationaloutreach.
- Supports instructional design efforts across externally fundedprojects, grants, and statewide initiatives.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams includingresearchers, implementation specialists, clinicians, educators, andtechnology staff.
- Assists in evaluating instructional effectiveness through datacollection, learner analytics, and quality improvementprocesses.
- Identifies opportunities to improve educational products,learner engagement, and implementation supports.
- Stays current with emerging instructional technologies andevidence-based instructional design practices.
- Participates in project planning, team meetings, and ongoingprofessional development.
- Maintains organized project documentation, timelines, andinstructional assets.
- Supports grant reporting and documentation related toeducational deliverables.
- Assists with quality assurance and accessibility review ofinstructional materials.
- Completes required university compliance and research trainingsas applicable.
- Performs other duties as assigned in support of Centerpriorities.
General Responsibilities
- Consults and serves as an experienced resource in planning,testing and implementing instructional technology projects thatsupport innovative approaches to learning, instructional andassessment.
- Maintains currency on emerging technologies related to learningmanagement systems, active learning classrooms, electroniccollaboration and social networking, instructional use ofmultimedia, electronic conferencing and online instruction to helpfaculty make evidence-based decisions about the use oftechnology.
- Researches, stays up-to-date, and recommends appropriatetechnologies for developing materials, delivery mechanisms andcourse/instructor/student assessments to support effectiveteaching.
- Develops and designs workshop materials that promote technologystrategies in traditional and online courses and conductsindividual, group and large audience training sessions.
- Collaborates in larger initiatives and working groups tosupport university efforts to improve teaching and learning.
Qualifications
Combinations of related education and experience may beconsidered. Education beyond the minimum required may besubstituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimumrequired may be substituted for education.
EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree (preferably in computer science,instructional technology/design, or related field.)
Preferred
- Master's degree.
- Coursework related to accessibility, Universal Design forLearning (UDL), implementation science, or evidence-basedinstructional practices.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 2 years of experience in instructional development and/orinstructional technology consulting, and/or training, and/orteaching (face-to-face or online) or providing instructional designwith online instructional technology, preferably in a highereducation context.
Preferred
- Experience related to accessibility, Universal Design forLearning (UDL), implementation science, or evidence-basedinstructional practices.
- Experience designing adult learning experiences andprofessional development programs.
- Experience collaborating with subject matter experts to developeducational content.
- Experience supporting projects in higher education, healthcare,disability services, or nonprofit environments.
- Experience with autism, developmental disabilities,implementation science, or behavioral health.

- Knowledge of adult learning theory and instructional designmodels (e.g., Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, andEvaluation (ADDIE), successive approximation model (SAM), backwarddesign).
- Experience using authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline,Rise, Adobe Creative Suite, Camtasia, Canva, or similarinstructional technologies.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards Web Content AccessibilityGuidelines (WCAG) and Universal Design for Learningprinciples.
- Strong project management and organizational skills with theability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Ability to analyze learner needs and translate complex conceptsinto engaging instructional materials.
- Ability to evaluate training effectiveness using learnerfeedback and performance data.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and tooperate a computer and other standard office productivityequipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periodsof time moving around an office environment and the campus.
