Job summary

Chesapeake College seeks a Coordinator for Adult Education (ABE/GED/ESL) to lead instructional practices, mentor staff, and drive curriculum development across programs. The role collaborates with leadership to ensure quality, compliance, and learner success within a grant-funded setting.

The ideal candidate will oversee professional development, recruit staff, design onboarding, and align assessments with curriculum to support targeted outcomes and accreditation standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required; Masters preferred.
  • AEFLA-funded adult education experience preferred.
  • Adult education teaching experience with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Training, mentoring, and professional development delivery required.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and practice.
  • Familiarity with professional development standards/methods/techniques.
  • Knowledge of assessment, curriculum design, development, and instructional strategies based on adult learning research.

Description

This grant-funded position serves as the Coordinator for all Adult Basic Education (ABE), General Education Development (GED), and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, and serves as a primary instructional leader and resource for all ABE/GED/ESL instructional staff within the Chesapeake College Adult Education Program. This position leads and oversees all ABE/GED/ESL instructional professional development, drives ABE/GED/ESL curriculum design and development, and ensures high-quality, effective instructional practices. Additionally, the position actively supports, mentors, and collaborates with instructional staff and program leadership to advance program goals and student success.

Examples of Duties
  • Serve as a key member of the programs leadership team, collaborating strategically with the Program Administrator, MIS Specialist, Intake/Assessment Specialist (IAS), and Transition Specialist to ensure cohesive program planning, compliance, and outcomes.
  • Lead the identification of local professional development priorities and design, coordinate, and deliver high-impact professional learning initiatives aligned to learner achievement and program goals.
  • Function as the instructional leader and master teacher for GED/ABE/ESL Instructors, setting instructional vision, modeling best practices, and ensuring consistency and quality across classrooms.
  • Head the recruitment, interviewing, and selection of instructional staff, including teachers and substitutes, to ensure high-quality instructional capacity.
  • Design, deliver, and oversee comprehensive onboarding and training systems for all new instructional staff to ensure readiness, alignment with best teaching practices, and instructional effectiveness.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of curriculum aligned with AELS Instructional Standards and program performance metrics.
  • Direct the creation and revision of leveled curricula to meet diverse learner needs and support differentiated instruction across program offerings.
  • Oversee the sourcing, purchasing, and evaluation of adult education curricula, resources, and technology for all ABE/GED and ESL classes.
  • Provide ongoing mentoring, coaching, and professional support to instructional staff to strengthen instructional practice, retention, and professional growth.
  • Conduct formal classroom observations, document instructional performance, and deliver actionable feedback to support continuous instructional improvement and accountability.
  • Ensure intentional alignment among assessment practices, curriculum design, and instructional delivery to drive data-informed decision-making.
  • Strengthen connections between instructional practices and accountability requirements, ensuring compliance with institution, state, and federal requirements while maintaining instructional integrity.
  • Collaborate closely with the IAS to design instructional supports and accommodations for learners with special needs, including individuals with disabilities and English language learners.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and monitoring of the programs Data Quality Plan to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Provide leadership oversight for the recruitment, coordination, and support of volunteer tutors to enhance instructional services and learner outcomes.
  • Represent the program at state Instructional Specialist communities of practice and ensure timely communication, translation, and implementation of relevant guidance at the local level.
  • Participate in state-level professional development and Train-the-Trainer initiatives and assume responsibility for disseminating and institutionalizing training content for local staff.
  • Support program sustainability by assisting with grant development, proposal writing, and budget planning in alignment with program priorities.
  • Collaborate with the IAS to plan, develop, and schedule LABOR grant-funded classes, ensuring alignment with grant objectives and workforce needs.
  • Partner with the IAS to design new course offerings based on labor market demand, confirm placement of existing courses, cultivate community partnerships, and secure instructional spaces.
  • Exercise instructional leadership in the selection and approval of textbooks, instructional materials, and resources used across program classes.
  • Coordinate with the IAS to ensure compliance with LABOR grant pre- and post-testing requirements and reporting standards.
  • Coordinate with the Program Administrator and IAS to align class schedules with Continuing Education systems and the College website to ensure accuracy and accessibility.
  • Perform additional leadership duties as assigned in response to program demographics, enrollment trends, funding priorities, and the evolving needs of target population.
Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree required; Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in an Adult Education and Family Literacy Services (AEFLA) funded adult education program preferred.
  • Adult education teaching experience, strong organizational and interpersonal skills required.
  • Training, mentoring, and experience delivering professional development required.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of professional development standards, methods, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of assessment, curriculum design, development, and instructional processes and strategies based on research in adult learning and development.
  • Knowledge of all Literacy Pro Systems (LACES) data elements and the local programs Intake and Update forms.
  • Valid driving record required.
Physical Requirements
  • Most of the job is sedentary; however, occasional periods of light work may be required.
