TITLE: INSTRUCTIONAL COACH

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Current and Valid Illinois Teacher License.
  2. Possession of an advanced educational degree in Literacy, Mathematics, Technology (preferred) or a related field or National Board Certification.
  3. Coaching experience (preferred).
  4. Experience in delivering professional development to teachers.
  5. Evidence of at least three (3) years of exemplary classroom teaching experience, with at least two consecutive ratings of “excellent” on the most recent evaluations.
  6. A proven track record in using a rich array of instructional methods, analyzing and using data and technology to improve instruction, building professional relationships, solving problems, and planning collaboratively.
  7. Evidence of productive experience with result-based collaboration.
  8. Evidence of planning, organization, and time management skills that will bring structure and accountability to the position.
  9. Proven ability to apply literacy and/or mathematics content knowledge, formative assessment, and technology integration at a high level.
  10. Deep understanding of student learning theory, brain-based learning, differentiated instruction, and adult learning.
  11. Proven ability to engage teachers in the collaborative exploration of data and interventions.
  12. Proven ability to listen, share ideas, identify obstacles to student achievement, and plan together with individual teachers and schools through a free flow of ideas.
  13. Desire to continue learning “what works” in classroom instruction.
  14. Evidence of improving student achievement in the classroom.
  15. Knowledge of equity issues in current education reform.
  16. Knowledge of standards-based education systems (e.g., CCSS, 4Cs, C3 Framework)
  17. Have experience as an innovative classroom teacher (or particular area teacher) who successfully integrated the use of instructional technology to enhance student learning with demonstrable results.
  18. Must be a master teacher who continually stays up-to-date with the latest research in instructional practices and technology.
  19. Intermediate to advanced technology skills.

REPORTS TO: Director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction or Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction

SUPERVISES: N/A

PURPOSE OF JOB: The Instructional Coach will serve as part of the school’s leadership team providing “just in time,” job-embedded and ongoing professional development for teachers, staff, and administration. They partner with teachers to support student learning through the collaborative exploration of instructional strategies, data, differentiation, and meaningful technology integration, fostering an inclusive and rigorous learning environment in all subject areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides on-site embedded professional development and support to teachers in the use of proven instructional methods.
  2. Collaborates with district-level staff developers to plan and implement instructional learning opportunities for staff.
  3. Participates in the school improvement process through goal setting and implementation as well as data analysis for instructional improvement.
  4. Delivers appropriate coaching, training, and resources to support the professional growth of individuals based on staff needs.
  5. Researches new instructional and technology integration techniques and resources for dissemination to instructional staff. Advises school and district administrators on high-value, high-impact instructional and technology integration techniques and resources.
  6. Leads professional discussions about research-based instructional methods that are age and level-appropriate during common planning time, faculty meetings, and other professional development time.
  7. Works in partnerships to accelerate teachers’ professional learning through mutually enriching, healthy relationships based on team needs, the individual teacher’s needs, and—most importantly—students’ needs.
  8. Advises instructional staff on the use of various technology tools to aid content comprehension, differentiation, and remediation.
  9. Communicates purposefully and frequently with teachers through conversations, e-mails, memos, newsletters, websites, study groups, or other appropriate methods.
  10. Provides modeling and co-teaching of a variety of proven instructional and technology integration methods, use of materials and assessments in the classroom setting to increase teacher confidence and enable teachers to utilize a variety of effective teaching techniques.
  11. Views classes, the collaborating teacher teaches to provide specific and confidential feedback in individual coach-teacher conferences.
  12. Assists in identifying, planning, and facilitating workshops, institutes, and school improvement activities, including in-service programs that contribute to staff training and development.
  13. Assist administrators in learning high-value, high-impact instructional techniques, and technology integration.
  14. Assists teachers to analyze data and use the results for instructional decisions. Coordinate action research in collaboration with teachers and teams to track progress and measure the effectiveness of coaching support.
  15. Participates in regularly scheduled professional learning facilitated by the district in which coaches examine their own practice, share ideas, problem-solve, and develop coaching and best practice expertise and tools.
  16. Maintains a current knowledge of effective instructional and technology integration strategies and coaching pedagogy.
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.
