Qualifications

Candidates must possess at least a Bachelor's degree, although a Master's degree and/or a Mathematics Specialist endorsement is preferred. They must hold, or be eligible to hold, a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in Elementary Education. A minimum of five years of teaching experience is preferred. Candidates should have the ability to plan, organize, and deliver mathematics and science professional development for teachers, administrators, and other staff. They must be able to work with classroom teachers to develop specific strategies for effectively teaching math and science. Proficiency in using data to assess student learning and demonstrate evidence of growth is required. Candidates should be able to model effective teaching and instruction techniques for students with diverse learning needs. They must be knowledgeable about current trends in the effective delivery of math and science instruction and skilled in providing strategies and support to students with unique learning needs, such as students with disabilities and English Learners. Excellent technical, organizational, and communication skills are essential. Description

The Mathematics/Science Coach performs instructional support work involved in designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating the school math and science curriculum and instructional techniques. They are responsible for teaching and overseeing the instructional programs in math and science at the school, including observing and working with administrators and teachers to improve instruction and working with students who need additional support. This may include teaching and observing classes to model effective strategies/approaches and providing specific feedback to improve instructional practices. They will collect, monitor, and analyze math and science data to help administrators and teachers be informed and to make decisions regarding math and science instruction.

General Duties

• Assists administrators and teachers in the implementation of comprehensive elementary school mathematics and science programs.
• Works with teachers to implement a support framework for increased student achievement in math and science and to review the progress of all students in these subjects.
• Collects and facilitates the review and use of school math and science data to guide instruction and plan for student needs.
• Demonstrates effective math and science lessons to teachers in workshop settings and during professional development.
• Collaborates with individual teachers through co-planning, co-teaching, and coaching.
• Assists administrative and instructional staff in interpreting data and designing approaches to improve student achievement and instruction.
• Promotes teachers’ delivery and understanding of school curriculum through collaborative long-range planning and teacher coaching.
• Works collaboratively with classroom teachers to implement instructional strategies and practices to meet the needs of students with disabilities and students with various learning needs.
• Completes reports, collects data, and provides information for program monitoring as requested.
• Monitors the process of administering Science Local Alternative Assessments with 3rd grade teachers and the School Principal.
• Participates in the selection and development of math and science assessments for the school.
• Assists administrative personnel in instructional audits of math and science instruction in the school.
• Attends staff development meetings and programs in math/science instruction and curriculum.
• Plans and implements targeted, effective math/science instruction to small groups of students or individuals.
• Coordinates the use of volunteers, tutors, and teacher assistants to provide additional targeted support to identified students.
• Provides support and assistance to teachers who are new to the school, unlicensed, or struggling in the development and implementation of teaching strategies, curriculum, and assessment.
• Performs other assignments as assigned by the School Principal or Director of Elementary Instruction.

Supervision

Work is performed under the general supervision of the School Principal in consultation with the Director of Elementary Instruction.

Work Conditions

The duties are primarily carried out within the school setting. The role involves performing professional tasks that offer support and consultation for the assigned department or program. This work often entails frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting. Certain assignments may have deadlines as they involve customizing and delivering programs to cater to diverse groups' needs. Additionally, employees may be called upon to provide emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as required.
