Instructional Assistant – Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)

Lynchburg City Schools – Linkorne Middle School, Lynchburg, Virginia

Position Type: Non-Exempt; Classified Schedule

Position Summary

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT®) is a paraprofessional who practices under the ongoing supervision of the building administrator and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). The RBT is primarily responsible for directly implementing student‑specific behavior management/support services.

Essential Functions
  • Implement student‑specific behavior management/support plans under the supervision of the BCBA, Principal, and in consultation with the Behavior Coach.
  • Assist classroom teachers in gathering data related to student goals for assigned students.
  • Implement programming to increase student academic stamina and deliver reinforcement while the student completes classroom tasks.
  • Assist assigned students with self‑regulation during group activities.
  • Implement strategies to build student SEL competencies during instruction.
  • Provide daily updates on assigned students’ progress toward behavioral goal mastery.
  • Provide behavior‑specific redirection when behavior affects the learning environment.
  • Supervise assigned students during unstructured times such as lunch and recess for behavior programming purposes.
  • Work closely with the behavior coach to implement unified, comprehensive behavior programming.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED with at least 60 credit hours from an accredited post‑secondary institution or Associate’s Degree, or successful completion of the ParaPro assessment.
  • Agree to complete 40 hours of RBT online training within 1 month of employment and pass the RBT certification exam to become certified after hire.

  • Conduct telephone‑based or in-person interviews, data collection, and data entry.

Supervisory Responsibility

The RBT does not supervise any other personnel.

Travel Requirements
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Travel within Lynchburg as needed.
  • Minimal travel outside Lynchburg as needed.
Work Environment and Physical Demands

The role requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, talking, using hands, and stooping. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
