Job summary

Commonwealth of Massachusetts is seeking a part-time Instructional Assistant Program Coordinator for the Multi-Agency Public Safety program. The role involves supervising classes across MFA campuses, reviewing evaluations, and helping develop curricula and new programs.

Occasional travel across the Commonwealth is required. The position emphasizes coaching instructors, delivering high-quality training, and coordinating with DFS staff to ensure proper materials and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of fire service or emergency service experience (e.g., fire officer, fire investigator, training officer).
  • Instructor within a training program for at least five years.
  • Fire Instructor II completion or three years equivalent experience in instructional curriculum development and delivery.

Job description

The Department of Fire Services (DFS) is recruiting to fill the position of Multi-Agency Public Safety (Active Shooter Hostile Event Response / Fire Investigation) Instructional Assistant Program Coordinator.


The ideal candidate will be able to work two to three days per week in Multi-Agency Public Safety program area and be willing to travel to deliver programs across the Commonwealth. This is apart-time contract positionwith no benefits.


Description of Duties


  • Responsible for providing supervision of multiple classes at all MFA campuses and throughout the Commonwealth

  • Reviews and summarizes student evaluations

  • Conducts program review for Multi-Agency Public Safety program area and becomes involved in re ‐ development of existing programs and development of new programs

  • Prepares new equipment and/or replacement equipment lists annually and submits to Program Coordinator

  • Works closely with Support branch of DFS to ensure proper equipment and media are delivered to training sites

  • Develops new instructors through coaching, mentoring, teaching, and guiding

  • Observes instructors and provides guidance in program delivery

  • Actively participates in coordinator meetings

  • Researches, evaluates, and prepares recommendations on curricula, instructional methods, and materials for the program

  • Develops tests, questionnaires, and procedures to measure effectiveness of curriculum and to determine if program objectives are met

  • Recommends purchase of instructional materials, supplies, equipment, and visual aids to meet the needs of the program

  • Works with staff in assessment, curriculum development, management of student behavior, and use of materials and equipment

  • Observes, evaluates, and recommends changes in work of instructional staff to strengthen teaching skills in classroom

  • Plans, conducts, and evaluates training programs and other learning opportunities for instructors to study new classroom procedures, instructional materials, and teaching aids

  • Reviews and grades written test scores and skill sheets and counsels students when necessary

  • Prepares subjective evaluations on students for outstanding performance and non ‐ acceptable performance and counsels the student and notifies the Chief of the Department

  • May be assigned additional projects by MFA management

  • Facilitates NFA courses related to program division as needed to audit for internal instruction of state-sponsored deliveries

  • Actively participates in simulation (SIM) software trainings

  • Actively participates in curriculum development and virtual delivery platform trainings

  • Responsible for creating simulations for use in training programs

  • As needed, assists the Coordinator in reviewing trainingapplications submitted for credential credit


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Must have a minimum of three years of relevant fire service or emergency service industry experience such as a fire officer, fire investigator, training officer, or fire prevention position

  • Must be an instructor within a training program for a minimum of five years

  • Must have completed Fire Instructor II course and been promoted to Fire Instructor II with the MFA or a minimum of three years of equivalent experience of instructional curriculum development and course delivery


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Have superior interpersonal skills

  • Able to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point

  • Well organized and a team player

  • Have a demonstrated work record to support the skills required

  • Have a thorough knowledge of the Multi-Agency Public Safety and Fire Investigation programs

  • Have completed the MFA Advanced Fire Investigator Training Program or Certified as a Massachusetts Fire Investigator or Current Fire Investigator I

  • Have Fire Investigator Technician certification (IAAI-FIT)

  • Be familiar with the various associated NFPA codes and standards associated with Fire Investigation including but not limited to 921 and 1033

  • Have demonstrated record of working with the Massachusetts Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit (FEIU)

  • Have successfully completed Active Attack Integrated Response (AAIR) Train‑the‑Trainer 5-day program or willing to become an ALERRT Certified Instructor
