Job summary

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Department of Fire Services is seeking a part-time Fire Officer Instructional Assistant Program Coordinator. The role involves supervising classes, reviewing evaluations, and enhancing curricula across MFA campuses.

You will mentor instructors, help develop training materials and assessments, and coordinate with support teams to ensure effective delivery of programs throughout the Commonwealth.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of relevant fire service or emergency service experience.
  • Instructor in a training program for at least five years.
  • Fire Instructor II course completed and promoted to Fire Instructor II or three years equivalent instructional curriculum development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide supervision of multiple classes at MFA campuses and throughout the Commonwealth.
  • Review and summarize student evaluations and coordinate program reviews.
  • Develop curricula, instructional methods, tests, and materials to meet program objectives.
  • Mentor and observe instructors, guiding quality of teaching and delivery.
  • Coordinate testing, assessments, and credentialing processes for students.
  • Plan and participate in coordinator meetings and internal program audits.
  • Assist with equipment planning, supply purchasing, and media delivery to training sites.
  • Support curriculum development and virtual delivery trainings, including simulations.

Description

The Department of Fire Services (DFS) is recruiting to fill the position of Fire Officer Instructional Assistant Program Coordinator. This is a part-time, contract position with no benefits

The ideal candidate will be able to work two to three days per week in the Fire Officer program area and be willing to travel to deliver programs across the Commonwealth. This is a part-time contract position with no benefits.

Description of Duties

  • Responsible for providing supervision of multiple classes at all MFA campuses and throughout the Commonwealth
  • Reviews and summarizes student evaluations
  • Conducts program review for Fire Officer group and becomes involved in re‑development of existing programs and development of new programs
  • Prepares new equipment and/or replacement equipment lists annually and submits to Program Coordinator
  • Works closely with Support branch of DFS to ensure proper equipment and media are delivered to training sites
  • Develops new instructors through coaching, mentoring, teaching, and guiding
  • Observes instructors and provides guidance in program delivery
  • Actively participates in coordinator meetings
  • Researches, evaluates, and prepares recommendations on curricula, instructional methods, and materials for the program
  • Develops tests, questionnaires, and procedures to measure effectiveness of curriculum and to determine if program objectives are met
  • Recommends purchase of instructional materials, supplies, equipment, and visual aids to meet the needs of the program
  • Works with staff in assessment, curriculum development, management of student behavior, and use of materials and equipment
  • Observes, evaluates, and recommends changes in work of instructional staff to strengthen teaching skills in classroom
  • Plans, conducts, and evaluates training programs and other learning opportunities for instructors to study new classroom procedures, instructional materials, and teaching aids
  • Reviews and grades written test scores and skill sheets and counsels students when necessary
  • Prepares subjective evaluations on students for outstanding performance and non‑acceptable performance and counsels the student and notifies the Chief of the Department
  • May be assigned additional projects by MFA management
  • Hosts NFA courses related to program division as needed to audit for internal instruction of state-sponsored deliveries
  • Actively participates in simulation (SIM) software trainings
  • Actively participates in curriculum development and virtual delivery platform trainings
  • Responsible for creating simulations for use in training programs
  • As needed, assists the Coordinator in reviewing training applications submitted for credential credit

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum of three years of relevant fire service or emergency service industry experience such as a fire officer, fire investigator, training officer, or fire prevention position
  • Must be an instructor within a training program for a minimum of five years
  • Must have completed Fire Instructor II course and been promoted to Fire Instructor II with the MFA or a minimum of three years of equivalent experience of instructional curriculum development and course delivery

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Superior interpersonal skills
  • Able to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Well organized and a team player
  • Have a demonstrated work record to support the skills required
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the program that is being coordinated
  • Be a Fire Officer of a Fire Department
  • Betrained or certified to Fire Officer 2
