Job summary

The State of Indiana is seeking an Instructional Assistant for Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility in Pendleton, Indiana. You will support classroom activities, prepare lessons, assist with behavior management, and help with student progress and records.

A two-year related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Salary starts at $34,216 annually and may be commensurate with education and experience.

Qualifications

• Must test negative on all drug screenings if this position is based in a Correctional Facility.
• Must complete CPR and First Aid training after hire.
• Knowledge of institutional goals, policies, programs, and regulations.
• Knowledge of tutoring techniques and developmental disabilities as they relate to specialized instructional needs.
• Ability to relate to students at different stages of development and with varied disabilities.
• Ability to operate audio-visual and special educational equipment.
• Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships to promote instruction.
• Promote positive social values and personal accountability.

About Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility : Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility is a maximum‑security facilitylocatedin Pendleton, Indiana, with 391 beds for incarcerated juvenile males. The facility includes multiple general population housing complexes, an admission and orientation unit, and a secure housing area. Its campus‑style layout includes medical services, food and laundry operations, indoor recreation areas, a chapel, and Providence Jr./Sr. High School. Outdoor recreation areas include fields, courts, and a running track. The perimeter ismonitored24/7 to ensure safety. Programs focus on treatment, vocational skills, education, and re‑entry preparation.

Role Overview:

In this role as an Instructional Assistant, you will serve as an assistant to Classroom Teachers at Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility. Students may include mentally or physically handicapped, socially, or emotionally disturbed delinquents, or multiple handicapped persons. Your role will be to assist in the clerical preparations of daily and weekly lesson plans, recording of progress and performance of students, and to assist on field trips or experiential learning. You may also assist with special activities or student organizations and assist students in coursework. Instructional Assistants report directly to the Supervisor of Education and perform duties with general supervision. You will be responsible for assisting in the maintenance of discipline in the classroom and the school building. You may be required to participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

• Must test negative on all drug screenings if this position is based in a Correctional Facility.
• Upon hire, the ability to successfully complete all required training and certifications such as CPR and First Aid training.
• Working knowledge of institutional, as well as departmental goals, policies, programs, and regulations.
• Working knowledge of specialized instructional area and of tutoring techniques.
• Working knowledge of developmental and/or physical disabilities as they relate to specialized instructional needs.
• Ability to stimulate students’ interest and to relate well to those at different stages of development and with different physical, mental, and/or social disabilities.
• Ability to operate audio-visual and special educational equipment.
• Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with students to promote effective instruction.
• Ability to promote positive social values and personal accountability.

A degree is not required. However, at least two (2) years of full-time experience in an Educational Institution or related area applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.
