Position

Inspector, New Construction – Department of Surveyor

Schedule & Compensation

Full‑time, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Salary: $35.13–$36.00 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Inspect assigned drainage projects and permits during construction and reconstruction, ensuring compliance with county, state and local codes.
  • Monitor onsite work, issue stop‑work orders when violations occur, and negotiate change orders with contractors and developers as needed.
  • Maintain the database and file records for all permits until inspection and closure.
  • Conduct final inspections, generate punch lists and closeout documentation for contractors, engineers and developers.
  • Process plans and permit applications for a wide variety of projects including roads, bridges, utility lines, sanitary sewers, and stormwater systems.
  • Assist developers, contractors, engineers, adjacent counties and the public by answering questions, interpreting records, locating property lines, easements and utilities, and determining soil type and hydrology.
  • Investigate drainage problems and complaints, drive to/from sites, document field observations, analyze conditions and recommend solutions to supervisors.
  • Prepare and submit field reports, annual year‑end reports and other documentation as requested by the Surveyor and Drainage Board.
  • Attend pre‑construction meetings, technical advisory committees, progress meetings, county safety meetings and all Drainage Board meetings.
  • Supervise, interview and assist part‑time interns as assigned, including delegating work assignments.
  • Use survey equipment to check grades and elevations, assist survey crews, and maintain inspection equipment.
  • Respond to hazardous material spills involving regulated drains and report findings to the Drainage Board.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction or related field.
  • Minimum three years of relevant construction and engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local drainage regulations and hydraulic and civil engineering principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed plans, property records and surveying equipment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with county departments, contractors, developers, utilities and the public.
  • Self‑directed and capable of working independently while integrating into a team environment.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Certification as a Certified Erosion, Sediment and Stormwater Inspector (CESSWI) and/or Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CISEC), or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Need to complete a full Hepatitis B vaccination series within 10 days of assignment; willing to comply with all safety training requirements.
  • Flexibility to work extended, weekend and/or evening hours, occasional travel and overnight stays.
