Job summary

The City of Rochester Hills is seeking a qualified Plans Examiner/Electrical Inspector to review electrical plans and perform on-site inspections to ensure compliance with adopted codes and ordinances. This role includes documenting plan reviews and inspections and addressing code violations in a timely manner.

• Intermediate proficiency with office computers and related software.
• Valid Michigan Driver’s License with no more than 4 points on record.

Responsibilities

• Reviews construction plans and specifications to verify compliance with codes and ordinances.
• Conducts on-site inspections to verify compliance with approved drawings and codes.
• Performs Change of Occupancy inspections on existing buildings.
• Investigates complaints regarding building safety concerns and resolves issues.
• Prepares plan review correction letters and inspection violation notices; tracks violations.
• Conducts on-site meetings with contractors and owners to discuss code violations.
• Reviews permit condition documents for code compliance and defects.
• Educates customers and stakeholders about code and ordinance requirements.
• Analyzes industrial procedures to determine hazardous materials or conditions.

Job description

The position performs electrical plan reviews and on-site field inspections of properties to verify compliance with the approved construction documents, adopted codes, and ordinances of the City, to safeguard public health, safety and general welfare. This position is also responsible for administrative functions relative to the documentation of plan reviews and inspections.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1. Reviews construction plans and specifications to verify compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances.
2. Conducts on-site inspections to verify compliance with approved drawings and applicable codes and ordinances.
3. Performs Change of Occupancy inspections on existing buildings.
4. Investigates complaints from Fire Prevention Inspectors and the general public regarding building safety concerns. Resolves complaint issues.
5. Prepares and issues plan review correction letters and inspection violation notices. Tracks violiations until resolved.
6. Conducts on-site meetings with contractors and owners during construction to discuss Code violations found during inspections.
7. Reviews all documents required by permit conditions during construction, including deferred documents and special inspections, for Code compliance and defects.
8. Educates customers and all stake holders of code and ordinance requirements.
9. Analyzes complicated industrial procedures and processes to determine if hazardous materials or conditions exist.
10. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Associates degree in a related field AND three (3) years directly related experience OR
• High School diploma or GED equivalent AND six (6) years directly related experience AND
• Registration with the State of Michigan under Act 407 as a Plans Examiner and Electrical Inspector as determined by the State of Michigan
• Intermediate proficiency with office computers and related software.
• Valid Michigan Driver’s License with no more than 4 points currently on record.
